Just wondering how everyone covers bunts. 1. Runner on 1st base 2. Runner on 2nd base 3. Runner on 3rd Base 4. Runners on 1b and 2b 5. Runners on 2b and 3b 6. Runners on 1b and 3b 6. Bases Loaded
Emphasize always getting and an out, they only get three. The most difficult situation is for the 3rd baseman with 2nd base occupied. I play in to the cut-out and read the bunt. If there is any doubt that pitcher can field ball I make play to abide by golden rule of bunt d - ALWAYS GET AN OUT!
well, we want to get an out, of course, but alot depends on the situation. early in the game we'll get the out at first. later in tight game, we may go for the lead runner.
my F5 isn't the most athletic kid, so I usually have him charge and have F6 cover 3rd (wheel play). I don't trust F5 to move in, get back, and make a play.
Sac. bunts create the greatest problem when we fail to get lead runner. I teach if ball is bunted firmly to you and we are anticipating bunt look for lead runner with plenty of time to go to first. Late innings may lead to greater aggressiveness on defense. A key is anticipating bunt.
Bunt-1 Coverage No one on - Runner on first 1st has line - 3rd has line - Pitcher has front - Catcher has front - 2b has 1st - SS has second.
No one on the only play is 1st. Runner on 1st we take a look at second if the ball is bunted hard back to the pitcher or right out in front to the catcher. We have to know for sure we have the out at second - if there is any doubt at all we always get the out at first.
Bunt - 2 coverage Runner on second. 1st has line - catcher has front - pitcher has 3b line - 2b has 1st - 3b has 3b unless the ball is bunted hard up the line and the pitcher can not field it. Check 3b if we have a play get him but if not always get the out at first.
The key is always get an out. Eventually they will run out of outs if you get an out and do not botch plays. Sometimes it is critical that you get the lead runner at third base in bunt two depending on the situation of the game. This is where we work real hard on holding the runner close etc. But as a general rule if you get outs on sac bunts you will stay out of the big inning. And if you show the other team that you are well schooled in defending the bunt game you will not have to face it very often. Its alot like first and third defense.
