My sophomore who is on JV1 with twenty two other players (comprised of all sophomores and a couple of juniors)hasn't been in the batting line up for the last five games. So far, he does get lots of playing time on defense. However, coach always has a DH in his spot. Son finally talked to coach about getting some at bats. Coach says he will get to bat. Coach added 'you seem to be struggling in the batting cage.' BTW, twenty one of those players got an at bat in this tourney.

Does this make sense? Should we wait and see what happens?

Is it the batting tunnel (enclosed off the side) or the cage (covering at the plate on the field)? Reason I ask is that if it's the tunnel then BP in there can be hard to read. You don't see where the ball is going, how far, how hard it's coming off the bat and stuff like that. Now if it's the cage on the field then you can tell how well a hitter is doing.

Overall I would be a little more patient. A team with 23 players is hard to get playing time on. As the season goes on the cream rises to the top and the best players will get the bulk of the playing time......usually.

The season is early and tell him to keep working. If he's hitting in a tunnel then get him to hit screaming line drives back up the middle. If it's on the cage on the field then make sure he's hitting the ball solidly to all parts of the field.
My son complains that he actually gets to hit LESS once formal HS practice starts as they have to work through all of the kids on the team, and they are using up time in "his" cage. It is also not an accident that he and one other kid are the two that are there most often after practice, and at other “off” times at the cage. In nearly every case during the weekends or evenings when he goes to the cage to get in additional work there is one other kid there. Guess what?….those two hit in the 3 – 4 holes. Outwork everyone on the team and you will be in the lineup.
