I had the opportunity to play in a couple of scrimmages, practices and games last year from a team in the Cal SR League. Very cool experience to say the least, and I hope to return next summer after my freshman year in college.

As for the league itself, typically the top couple teams in the league are very good and compete well nationally. I believe the Bethesda Big Train (I think...) was ranked in the Top 20 in the country for the '09 summer. So there's definitely some good talent. Youses' Orioles actually won something like 6 national championships in a row recently too. Overall, I'd say it's a very good league (behind normal powerhouse leagues such as: Cape, Northwoods, Coastal Plains...)But nonetheless, should be an awesome chance for your son, as the league is always competitive and draws from a wide geographical base too.
GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the info, any idea what the summer will cost me, I believe I have to buy him a plane ticket but beyond that, how is the room and board handled, do the kids get one team meal a day??
I'm sure I will find out eventually but who knows when.

I can't speak for the financial part of it, but players stay with host families. That is why if a team is choosing between 2 players (one being a local kid coming home, and the other being from AZ), typically if they are the same skill, the home town kid will get the nod because they do not have to house them. However, as far as meals and such, you may be on your own. I'm truly not sure.

Some host families charge room and board for the summer, others may not.

By the way, the league is dropping the Sr. in their title. They are now call the Cal Ripken League.

Must be a Texas thing.

The Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League has a license agreement with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation for the use of the name
Cal Ripken, Sr. and is not affiliated with nor sponsored by the Foundation or Ripken Baseball.

Does it really matter what the Dallas based, National Alliance of College Summer Baseball
calls it?
