Do many of you pro umpires find it difficult to call? I have seen it a few times where the call wasn't made this year. It was obvious to the stands. We had a much better angle. Can the ump change the call after the catcher has to leave the game due to being smacked in the arm/hand or does it have to be witnessed? Just curious. It has happened to my son twice this year already and one other teammate.

I havent had any trouble making the call as long as I am tracking the ball properly and using appropriate timing......The times I have called it were so blatant that no one could miss it.....once the catchers mitt flew all the way to the pitchers mound......(easy call there)

Because a swing can be so fast it can be difficult to see, but this is where hearing comes into play. I may not see the bat hit the glove, but I will hear it and if I am using my proper timing I will see the impact result on the hand/glove as I follow the ball into the mit.

Being behind the plate does limit your vision of this, and being on an angle from the catcher would afford you another, possibly better view.........but we dont get to do that......

If I have missed it, I've missed it......cant/wont call what I dont see. I would not change the call.....

I didn't think you could change the call. It was just a little frustrating. Batter starts running to first, catcher pops up and throws it to first like it was a missed strike 3. Batter called out, catcher comes out of the game holding left arm and grimacing in pain. 3 times in 3 tournaments with three different umps. It is getting to be a little weird.
