History was made in Thousand Oaks yesterday as the Caltech Beavers beat the #10 ranked Cal Lutheran Kingsman for the FIRST TIME EVER.  And they didn't steal a win, or edge Cal Lu - they dominated them.

Congrats to the Beavers and families!

Actually...  according to the box score, Gustavus Adolphus (the MIAC team mentioned above) had their top players on the field when they beat Caltech 18-3 in Tucson. Their pitchers in that game are the three who they throw the most and all position players are the ones listed on their website as playing the most games with the highest batting averages. So, I don't think Caltech faced their "B" team. No big deal, really -- "we beat them with our B team" is harmless language players have been saying to their friends for years

But... Caltech's freshmen (among others) were really strong in that win over Cal Lutheran yesterday!

Yeah but Cal Tech lost the first two games to Cal Lu by scores of  13-3 and 21-3 ... So I wouldn't exactly say Cal Tech dominated,  but that Cal Lu went to sleep and decided they could take game three off or something.

Something you should never do.  ALWAYS respect the opponent!

I respectfully disagree. What you said about games one and two is correct. Cal Lu won the series, their game three loss is just a hiccup in the great scheme of things, and they are still in first place. But every baseball game is a fresh start, a blank sheet of paper.

Caltech dominated game three.

So, Cal Tech suffers two beat down games and then has the testicularity to win game three decisively against  a top ten opponent?  Sounds like a team with good coaching and players with hearts to match their IQs.

JCG, the starter for Cal Lutheran against MIT has the second most innings pitched on the staff.  That was MIT's 6th game in 5 days with conference games scheduled for their return.  The pitcher who closed the game for MIT had not pitched an inning in his 3 seasons until that day.  I'm thinking that was OFF  the "end of the bench" pitching.  Let's give these kids some credit.  MIT has 23 kids on their roster, and some of the opposing rosters they saw during the week in California listed 40+ kids.  I know only 35 of those suit up, but even that is a huge difference.  A 4-2 week was amazing!

Cal Lu has a great baseball program.  Met some of the coaches years ago.  They showed a high interest in my son for the program, however son had the "passion" for D-1.  Good academics, nice campus and area.

It is a great program,  but they do churn through a LOT of guys to keep it that way from year to year.  It really is run much more like a D2 than your typically D3.   A steady stream of D1 and D2 drop downs plus JC transfers plus recruited frosh brought in every year to compete for spots.  Lots of broken hearts generated in the process, but just about every single year a highly competitive team is fielded.

One of the seniors a few years ago explained it this way to me and my son,   "We don't rebuild, we just reload."

2019 is going to Caltech Pre Frosh Event in a couple weeks. Can't wait! He was recruited by Coach Mark this past summer at HF and we were concerned when he left. But he's talked w/new coach several times over the Winter and has a good feel. Honestly, I haven't even heard a lukewarm word about Caltech or the team from anyone who is or has been enrolled there. Working w/Financial Aid office now (and they've been great already), and hopefully he feels good after PFE. He'd love to be part of building something there with baseball and get a fantastic education at the same time to setup a tech career if we can make the finances and logistics of school across the country work.

Good Luck,

Even if the baseball program ever takes a step back. It is still a great place to go to school and a great opportunity.
