ok my son attened a college/showcase camp...he is a 15 year old pitcher. it was quite far from us, so we had to stay, as did most parents. he has a lot going for him...size and lefty. however, when they posted the volocity numbers (by son's number, not name), they listed him at 68 when he threw up to 75. how much will this hurt him, in the long run?
i dont want to call the place and make an issue. what do you guys think?

this is turning out to be just, an all about me post. lol. but one more thing, basically, for the sake of arguement, let's say the camp was correct. he could have not brought his velocity with him on the days of the camp. and that we seen the wrong number...lets just say that for kicks.
my question is will this hurt him in the long run or do the college coaches like who they see when they see them or is it not that important because he is young and this camp was mainly for juniors.
i just kind of on my mind...
Just being 15 he will have many opportunities to redeam himself if that is necessary at all. Yes there are coaches who get caught up velocity numbers. However, for a 15 year old what are what are the possibilities with this young man? Did he mature early or will he be 6'5" in a few years? Did he have good mechanics? Did he hit his spots? Did his pitches have a lot of movement? Way too soon to get concerned about velocity.

I have a senior who has a lot going for him but not a lot of velocity. I know that some coaches have passed over him but a coach asked him recently if he got batters out and he could confidently say, "yes sir".

Keep him healthy and try not to focus on the velocity and all will be well.
I would assume that they have to post what he threw, and that was the velocity they recorded for him. Maybe they took an average. Who knows? Sometimes our boys have bad days. It is what it is. Take is as one more piece of information and move ahead. As long as keeps working and shows improvement next year, he'll probably be fine. If having the result posted bothers you, they'll probably take it down if you ask.
ok. that is all i needed to hear, K9trnr. they have it posted by number, so only the college coaches that were there and wanted to see it, would even know who he is. so, i don't think i will bother the coordinators with having them taking it down. thank you.
hey, and guess what? he is 6'5" already and he also can confidently say....he can get the outs (so far, anyhow). I hope all goes well with all our boys in the future.

Just to help you--we had a boy a few years back that came in touted to be mid 80's and at our event he threw 78---his dad was irate but what can you do---myself and a bevy of coaches with guns all had him the same---chalk it off to a bad day--for all we knew the kid pitched a day or two before the event--he is now doing well in college and throwing mid 80's regularly
yes, i don't want to cause any trouble because i mean, my son could have had an off day, for sure or even if it didn't and it was a bit of bad luck, (ie recording when he was lower v)...there is not much that can be done now.
i just wanted to make sure that doing this showcase actually didnt do him more harm than good, you know. i am very knew to this.
ps. i didn't find out until later but he did throw the day before but he is a work horse (can go a full game) so i didn't think that would matter.

Understand your concern, but you needn't be. Bad days happen and your son at 15 is no where near his "last chance". He'll have plenty of time to showcase his talent. Besides, just think how amazed those same coaches will be at the gain in velocity the next time they see him on a good day. Wink

I remember too many times when son was growing up that he would decided to go swimming, bowling, or take part in a long batting practice, etc. the day before he was suppose to pitch! Kids, Roll Eyes they are having fun and think their invincible ... until they wonder why their pitching dropped off the next day. Big Grin It happens. Just put this one behind you and he'll be better prepared the next time.

Minivanmom,

I wouldn't be too concerned about the velocity descrepancy. The fact that your son is only 15, a lefty, and has good size, is a good start. I would make sure that next time he attends a showcase event, not to pitch the day before. Even the best closers in the MLB tend to lose velocity on days they throw back to back. Good luck to your son this season!
