As the MLB season comes to it's climatic end, people are throwing 2 big names into the AL MVP pot, Alex Rodriguez & David Ortiz.
Both are having great seasons at the plate.

Rodriguez
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG

153 571 115 181 26 1 45 121 344 85 132 16 6 .418 .602 .317

Ortiz
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG

150 568 114 169 38 1 46 140 347 94 114 1 0 .393 .611 .298

The big question is: Can a DH be the leagues MVP?

Fielding Stats:

Rodriguez
POS G GS INN TC PO A E DP PB SB CS RF FPCT
3B 152 152 1312.2 389 111 267 11 25 --- --- --- 2.59 .972

SS 3 0 6.0 3 1 2 0 0 --- --- --- 4.50 1.000

Ortiz
POS G GS INN TC PO A E DP PB SB CS RF FPCT

1B 10 10 78.0 82 69 11 2 8 --- --- --- 9.23 .976

Ortiz has only played 10 games at 1B this season. So the thinking against him is, if he doesn't contribute with the bat, he can't help the team. Meanwhile Rodriguez is paying a gold glove 3B

PS. I wish there was a way to better align the stats... guess you will have to look at the links to get a better view.

Well I think the most efficient way is to create another award. Keep the MVP for the overall greatest player, which is A-Rod this year. But make a Best Offensive Player, or BOP, for soemone like Ortiz who is mope single dimensional. This is sort of done with pitchers with the Cy Young, as most they can't really win the MVP.
I think the DH should me able to win the MVP. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER if the Sox win the AL east, Ortiz deserves the award because he was the most valuable player on their team. I think A-Rod is having the best year and he should win it if the yankees win the east. I don't like the DH but since we have it we have to deal with it. Everyone says defense wins championships but hitting in clutch situations really wins championships. You see more game winning hits than you see game winning plays on the field.
NO....unless the DH is head and shoulders above everyone else, which is not the case in this situation. I love Ortiz, and I can't think of many hitters in baseball that I would want up in a key situation more than I'd want Big Poppy. However, ARod has similiar numbers and plays quality defense...and that takes Ortiz out of the running.
Of course (and this might stimulate more debate), I don't think a pitcher should ever win the MVP award either (and I was a pitcher).

Also if Manny was not batting after Ortiz, he would be walked alot more. Still can not see why you would pitch to him when there is any chance he can change the outcome of a game they way he consistently continues to do???????????????
It's nice problem to have, isn't it?
...More than one name to mention when summarizing why we are in a position for post season?

My feelings about this award have nothing to do with the fact that the front runners are RedSox/Yankees....yeah, right!

But I do feel that a DH plays half the game.
WHile Arod is out diving for balls, throwing across the diamond and flashing the leather...
Big Papi has his feet up in the sweltering heat of Texas sipping Ice Tea in the clubhouse?? Less chance of fatigue, less chance of injury and less chance to break down over a season, IMO.

If both were to be injured and needed to be subbed for indefinitely, who would be harder to replace? The big hitter or the big hitter who also is a golden glove candidate?

BTW...let's add Aaron Small to the list LOL
