As most of you know, at the beginning of my Sophmore season I broke my Thumb on my throwing hand the day before tryouts but played the whole year in pain, not realizing it was broken. My junior year, during our FIRST scrimmage in NJ, I broke my finger sliding/tripping into 2nd base on my first Varsity AB (Which was a double). I was out for the season. Today I rolled my ankle and heard a pop/crack. My friend carried me to the car and I drove to my aunts. Shes a nurse and her friend is one also. The both looked at it and said, "Broken" right away. Well I got X-rays and the doc said Its not broken, and all of the swelling on the left side of my left foot was blood, and I had to wait for it to dissipate. Tryouts begin on Monday. Last week In Fl. I thought I broke my thumb when I heard snapping after a dive for a ground ball, but it turned out to be a severe sprain....I know im venting, but I just can't seem to start a season and play the whole way through....

Does anyone know anything I can do to help a foot sprain? The swelling was on the left side of the left foot, in the middle. It has gone down with icing. The ankle doesn't hurt at all, which is wierd, but the foot does. I am staying home from school tomorrow and putting no pressure on it except for a little, which the doc recomended. I plan on icing it and taking Ibuprofen as the doc reccomended.

Thanks
Chris

Tough one. Agreed go get it checked out asap.

I had this happen to me 2 weeks before pre-season training began senior year of college. I did everything right and was swinging in 2 weeks and on the field sprinting by opening day.

It can be done...you are doing the right thing and stick to the R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice Compression, Elevation) formula until you see the doc.

Keep you head up. You will be ok.

Not to disagree that there are differences between an ankle sprain and food poisoning, but one should not underestimate or discount the very negative effects that food-borne diseases can have on athletes.

Serious cases of food poisoning associated with E-coli O-157H7, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Shigella, hepatitis, Norwalk, etc., etc., etc., can manifest symptoms that last for several weeks and can drain weight/muscle and strength for months afterward. In some cases, these diseases can kill healthy adults or seriously damage their kidneys and intestines.

So, there are belly aches and, then, there are food-borne diseases. "Fighting through" two cases of serious food poisoning may have been more of a challenge than one might suppose.

In any case, I believe that Upstate's message was simply intended as a positive note of encouragement.

Correct. TR, I would love to have had food poisoning for only a day or two and then it's over with, but I understand what you are saying as well as eventually I will be "un-poisoned", but physical injuries tend to linger.
I can definitely say I kinda know how you feel, and it sucks. During my sophomore season, about 2 days from the first game, I come down with a sickness that was harming my white blood cells and I was out for 2 weeks, and then it took about another week just to get some strength back. In the end, I never really recovered until Legion started in the summer. Now this year, Junior, a 4 days before tryouts (I'm a pitcher) my elbow starts hurting. 4 days later...it still is. Luckily so far, all signs point to inflammation, which as far as "injuries" go, that's not bad at all, just praying that that's all it is and that I don't have tennis elbow or anything...I should find out in the next couple of days.

BTW, If I had tennis elbow, would I be able to do push ups and bench press with NO pain at all?? Because right now I can.
plp,I feel your pain.I know how tough to is to work so hard all winter and then see it go away when you are out for a couple weeks or even a season

Yesterday I dislocated my thumb and had bruised tissue on my throwing hand(or thats what the Dr. called it).Happened in our final scrimmage

I dont know what my coach thought, but I had been playing well and I felt I had a chance to win the starting job come this thursday(our season opener),but I will sit and watch in street clothes until at the earliest monday

Good luck, hope everything turns out well for you.
