Is it usual for a coach to tell a player he has been granted admission before the actual admissions letters go out? I guess this would be an unofficial notification? We have a week to go for official notification and the coach called last night to let us know son was cleared for admission, but it would be a couple of weeks until scholly notifications were sent... <scratch head>

Very common. Coaches use this as an opportunity to make contact with positive news.

Junior always heard from the coach regarding admissions. At West Point, it was actually somewhat of a ceremonious moment, as the coach presented Junior with a folder/frame with an embossed admissions offer certificate to conclude our official visit.
quillgirl- Congratulations on the acceptance. The same thing happened to me. My school has rolling admission, so I technically was not officially accepted until January of my senior year of high school. My coach called and told me in November that I was going to make it through admissions based on my scores and what the admissions officers told him

After Junior commited, he confided that he wouldn't have gone into the season as relaxed had he not reached his conclusion prior to it.

Congrats to your son and family.
