we are playing a team tomorrow that takes the most ridiculous lead off's(posted earlier about them).
So in order to beat them at their own game, I am going to have my pitcher lift his leg spin around and run down r2(then throw to 3rd for the out), I can guarantee that r2 will take a lead half way to 3rd and take off for 3rd upon leg lift....this is where I hope to get r2 and stop the ridiculous lead off's and play a normal game of baseball without his team taking advantage of our inexperience. Also plan on having catcher throw down to first to help try to hold them on(but it may be left to pitcher because they always go half way and then run on leg lift). I just want to stay close and not lose to them twenty something to 5 like we and every other team so far.

Basically need to make sure my pitcher can spin and run either to 3rd or 2nd, Thanks.

If the runner is breaking on first motion then the pitcher can just step to third to pick the runner. If he isn't breaking then it is going to be a balk. To be safe the pitcher can just step over and fake to to second, which in reality is anywhere on the backside of the rubber. Then he can run at the runner, throw ahead of him or chase him back to second. I would roll over toward second and drive him back a couple of times. The other thing he can do is rollover and throw to the SS in his position.

Michael: I've seen that called both ways....stepping to 3rd when the runner breaks and throwing straight there....last time it happened (we were the offense) umpire called a balk and said he was throwing to an unocupied base, time before in a game I was scouting they allowed it after a 5 minute conference between the 3 umpires....my question is where in the rule book is this clearly stated?

Also, if a runner at 1st breaks to 2nd when LHP picks his foot up (1st move) can he spin and throw to 2nd to get him there or is that a balk?

Thanks for your help.

OBR 8.01c: At any time during the pitcher’s preliminary movements and until his natural pitching motion commits him to the pitch, he may throw to any base provided he steps directly toward such base before making the throw.

8.05c: If there is a runner, or runners, it is a balk when—
(c) The pitcher, while touching his plate, fails to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base;
(d) The pitcher, while touching his plate, throws, or feints a throw to an unoccupied base, except for the purpose of making a play;

He's stepping and throwing to 3B to make a play, so it's not a balk.
