My son is a senior who has some interest from some Ivies although nothing solid. So, I'm sure he's not top of the list. Penn said he's in the last round of people they are considering and will make their decision end of the month, etc. But, he also loves football, is recently elected captain and is having a great year. First, is it possible to play football and baseball at Ivies. Second, will it hurt his chances with baseball if he goes ahead and contacts some football coaches since he has nothing solid by now for baseball. Most football coaches want senior film by the end of September and make their decisions later after reviewing senior film. Thanks. Especially interested in thoughts about Dartmouth.

Being very familiar with Coach Whalen at Dartmouth, I can tell you that he probably wouldn't like your son to play football at Dartmouth if he played baseball too. I'm sure he'd be supportive and all, but he's a very organized, meticulous coach. He has a detailed fall program that players would not participate in if they were playing football. I don't know if he has dealt with this in the past, but I do know that considering how dedicated and organized his program is, I'd find it surprising if he was encouraging of players not participating.
I guess I was wondering if D1 recruiting was basically over. Sounds like it is from various message boards.

So, if my son is equally talented in football and baseball, but doesn't have anything solid yet, should he go ahead with trying for football. (He's got some D3 very interested and will go to the overnight in October, but he may want to make sure he can't play at a school like Dartmouth). If Dartmouth is basically done with recruiting will it hurt to start the process for football. (Baseball is 1st choice though)
I don't think any school is ever really done in recruiting. If the school doesn't particularly know your son at this point, it might be hard to get them to really push for him in admissions. However, if he is a good player in either sport, I'm sure the coach of that sport would want him. If he needs a coach pushing him in admissions to get him in, then I'd definitely contact the football coach. Even if he could get in on his own, I'd still contact the football coach. My earlier post was simply saying that it would probably be hard (although I don't know how hard) to do both at a school like Dartmouth.
My son will be a two sport athlete (football & baseball) at a NESCAC school this year. Although there are exceptions that have been documented here, the NESCAC is definitely more conducive to two sport athletes than the Ivies. Even though I, he and most importantly his mother are thrilled with the program and now wouldn't want him anywhere else, I wonder what other choices he missed out on by concentrating only on the baseball side of recruiting. I don't think it would hurt to send tapes out to football coaches in the Ivies, but more importantly let your high school football coach know that he is interested in playing football at the next level. With my son, because his high school football coach knew that he was interested in baseball and was being recruited there, he was not mentioned to the recruiters who came to visit the school. Good luck and I empathize with you. It is a tough process with a two sport athlete. But I think those athletes are valued in the NESCAC more than anywhere else.
