Canseco probably is responsible for bringing the problem of HGH and steroid usage to the forefront. If he kept his mouth shut usage probably would have gone on for a few more years before the use of performance enhancing drugs would have been investigated. Although he did it for personal gain, should he praised for blowing the whistle on baseball or condemned for selling out the baseball establishment.

I have not read his book, but from what I have heard I believe he was attempting to make the case FOR steroid use in baseball. Not trying to discourage the use of them. He did bring the subject to everyones attention, for that I suppose we can thank him. But praise him for using and trying to defend their use and encourage their use...No I don't think he deserves our praise
As TR said, Was it just good timing when he wrote and released his first book?

Or was his book part of the cause for things such as the Congressional Hearings and the Mitchell Report?

Yeah it was for personal gain TPM, but I'd say some good came from it. I'm not saying that his book helped clean up the game, but it sure forced a lot of people to take a deeper look into what was/is going on with the game.

JMHO
Canseco should neither be praised or condemned. He should be feared. At the time he came out with the first book he was viewed as a lying, self-centered, self-promoter who was looking for a way to get back at the game. He was a bitter criminal who cheated his talent and the game. The sad part about it was that he turned out to be accurate for the most part. Now, he thinks he has been justified and feels self-righteous. The next book will be full of new names and new allegations. I don't trust that the second version will be found as fact filled as the first. Canseco is arrogant and stupid enough to think that everyone will believe him because he was right the last time. I look at it, that even a blind squirrel can find an acorn.

He has already named A-rod. I have seen nothing to implicate Arod. That is what makes him a very dangerous man. Fear Canseco.
Funny I just finished reading Jose's book. Got it from the library, it's going back today. Yep Jose is a tool and I believe very bitter towards baseball. And I really hope Arod is not involved, but if they come out with some evidence that he is, I will have no problem seeing him in the same light as the others. Hopefully he's not, cause baseball doesn't need another black-eye.
Canseco was not the only player to talk about steroid use in baseball, he just named names. MLB knew they had a big problem back in 1994.

There was world series winner that majority of their team was juiced before 1994.

Pretty easy to figure this one out too,A big steroid dealer was good friends with the team manager too and often in the teams club house.
