Quick question for those that may have first hand knowledge. Son has had a couple of conversations about playing on the Cape next summer. If the 2017 MLB draft date holds as currently scheduled, based on his date of birth I believe he would be a draft eligible soph. He had a coach tell him that he could only get a temp contract because he is draft eligible. I have pounded google and I can't find that there is a rule that says that. Son has checked with a couple of buddies currently playing there and they have not heard of that. Do you suppose it is a team/coach thing or does the Cape League have a specific rule stating draft eligible kids can only get temp contracts as opposed to permanent ones.

If you look at several of the Cape Cod rosters, there are plenty of juniors (mostly sophomores, some freshmen, too). They all couldn't have been on temporary contracts.
Mostly temporary contracts are used for needing players until the postseason games are over.
As far as the cape league, your sons college coaches will decide where he will play next summer, so this should be discussed with them.

I'm aware of that. Thanks TPM.
I do not know about the culture @ your Sons' college, but discussing summer placement is about as taboo as discussing Scholarship Awards at my Sons' college. It just is not done. I would be careful. And remember in one of my earlier posts I said, "A lot can happen in a year, or not." Sons' coach waits just about till Fall Practice is ending in Mid October to start making placements for the following summer.
I think many times placements are based on relationships between the college coaches and the summer teams. Does your son's school have a history of sending kids to the Cape? If not, maybe a temporary spot is the most your coach can do?
I also know of players that are assigned to the Cape early, then don't pan out during the regular season and decide (more likely it was decided for them) to go elsewhere for the summer.
Interesting comment above by Journey On about discussing summer placement being taboo. The kids seem to talk about it some, but when the parents start chatting...watch out. Some kids don't get placed at all, some elect to not play and do internships, some get placed in August right after the season ends, and everything in between. What folks may not realize is that some summer teams/leagues actually recruit players.
