I was going to post the same thing...But I didn't want to waste my time. Wink I do agree with one thing though, it would be nice for someone like Arte to take over the Dodgers!
Those who really know the whole Carl Crawford story are very happy for him. Dan Jennings (VP Marlins) was the Rays scouting director when Carl signed. He knows the story better than most anyone. It's a great story that will be told someday.

Eric Crouch wouldn't have won the Heisman Trophy had Carl went to Nebraska because Carl would have been the QB. He was Nebraska's #1 recruit as the best option QB in the country. Baseball beat football in this case!

I know Nolan Ryan is a rich man but he ain't Jerry Jones rich unfortunately. I would love to see Cliff Lee stay with Texas but I see him and Carl Crawford going to the Yankees.

Baseball needs a new model where each team is required to spend the same amount like football. There is no excuse for what is going on in Pittsburgh and no reason why the Yankees have to be in the World Series most years. The teams who do the best best scouting are the ones who should be getting rewarded. The Pittsburgh Steelers make money and no reason why the Pirates can't do the same without having to rely on their luxory tax money from the Yankees.

I thought that same argument would work for LeBron James. With the extra millions Lee can get from the Yankees, he'll be able to afford private jets for his family to fly them back to Arkansas from New York. Imagine that. Getting on a private jet every couple of weeks and eating/drinking like kings (while in the air) for a couple of hours each month. It's a tough life, but someone has to do it Smile
That still doesn't address the time factor. And, I wouldn't be so sure there's millions more in NY. Speculation here is that new TV deal I posted the link to above, was specifically to get funding in place to sign Lee. It doesn't start till 2014, but fronts the Rangers $80m. What do you think they will spend that $80m on........

PG - I know you have told bits and pieces of the story here before, but if you don't mind, it would be a nice thing for our members to hear it. Carl plays the game the right way.

They have to add to that though. I think CC got 120 or 140 spread out over 6 or 7 years. Lee is expecting CC Sabathia money and rightfully so imho.

Look, I am rooting for Texas to get him. If they can come up with another 60 or 70 to go along with the 80, they might have a chance.

The Yankees also scout well. Going by their run over say the last 20 years, look at the players they had come thru their farm system to make them winners. While they spend on players, they also spend on scouting as well. There seems to be a misconception that the Yankees win with only free agents but that usually comes from fans who's teams they root for have cheapskate owners that won't put the money back into their product the way the Yankees do.

Every team plays under the same set of rules that were agreed upon between the owners themselves and the players union. Nobody's stopping Pittsburgh, Tampa or any other team from keeping their homegrown talent.

To say MLB should have a system like the NFL is ludicris. Look at how weak the NFL is because of hard caps and limited spending and teams could afford to spend. You wind up with an inferior product on the field because when a key player gets hurt on a football team, that team is sunk because all the cap money is spent on the QB and there's whatsever left to spread around the rest of these teams making weak benches and ruining the quality of the play on the field. Then on top of that, football owners charge PSLs for fans just to have the right to buy sears for these games. And one last thing is NFL contracts not worth the paper they're written on because they get cut, they don't get paid while that contract or part of it goes against their cap.

MLB owners like the Yankees, Mets and Red Sox would never agree to the NFL way.

Baseball should stay as far away as possible from the NFL model. It don't work because owners get creative and try to work loopholes around the cap. Just keep it a free market. The teams will spend. The NFL has more loot than they know what to do with.

I realize $80m won't do it. What I'm saying is that contract gives the Rangers $80m day 1 to work with from the start...that's $80m they didn't have to work with this year. Then the TV deal increases the annual revenue from an estimated $20m to over $80m. My point is there's more than enough incremental money in that deal to sign Lee.

Then, don't forget no state income taxes. And, probably most importantly, Lee had this season to see you can pitch in the Ranger's ballpark in the summer...and survive, heck, even win. Most guys scare themselves off because of this and never give the Rangers a shot.
The Rangers have just as good a shot as the Yankees to sign Cliff Lee. Some players don't want to go to NY because of the pressure to win as a Yankee. However, I don't think that's true with Lee. Lee would be a big time pitcher with the Yankees and would thrive, not choke in NY. He's pitched in enough big games and has shut down or slowed down the Yankees in those big games.

Coach May said.....I used to pull for the Red Sox. But then they became another version of a team I never liked.

Funny you say that, as I told my wife the other day that the Red Sox owner is reminding me of a Yankee OWNER that I never liked. The more I learn about John Henry, and listen to him talk the more I'm absolutely turned off. The things he said about Carl Crawford are counter productive at this point of the season. As a lifelong member of Red Sox nation, I question if he has the "Nations" back. He certainly did not have Carl's.
