Hi guys, I just wonder what college are looking for a catcher... what are the stats, pop time etc, of a regular catcher in college...

And what is a great catcher who can get some scholarships in D1 or JUCO?

I'm a canadian upcoming senior and I know that there is not a lot of college scout that come in Quebec so what I'll have to do? Go in showcase... alone?

Thanks for you help!

The most important thing is to get seen, especially coming from Canada (camps and summer ball). If you were a kid that played highschool ball in Sand Diego, California that hit .385 with 16 home runs a college coach knows what that means. He knows the competition you are up against. If you are a kid from Canada that hit .385 with 16 homeruns a college coach has no clue what that means, chances are he doesn't follow the baseball seen in Quebec. Fungo's advice is dead on, find out where the good ball player's in Canada went to college, and speak with them and their coaches.

As for stats ... this is only my opinion, but I played college ball on a full ride and I was a catcher, so here it goes.

Good Grades:
No coach wants a trouble maker, or to waste money on a kid that will be ineligable. Catcher's have to be smart...they run the show. Nobody wants to dumb kid behind the dish.

High On Base Percentage:
Good walk to strike out ratio(5BB to 1K)

Catching:
You have to be an excently reciever of the baseball, No coach wants PB's with runners on.

Blocking:
Wild Pitches happen, you have to be a wall and have the attitude to put your teeth on a ball if you have to.

Throwing:
Good Pop Time always helps. I heard that major league average is in the ball park of 1.8 - 1.9

Footwork and Handspeed:
Quick, Quick, Quick

Most of the things listed are things a coach would have to see, it is important to either get the right guy on your side to call a prospective school (crediable instructor, highschool coach, etc.) or get to the states for as many try out camps as you can. Hopefully some of this information helps. Again it is just my opinion, collect as much info as you can and make your own decisions.

Good Luck
