As a catcher coming into highschool. I am serious about baseball and wish to make it to the next level. What kind of times to scouts look for, in times to running to 1st base, throwing down to 2nd base, batting average, throwing percentage? Any other stat that is look at as a catcher. If someone knows these can they please enlighten me on it?

I agree that scouts look for good pop times but it isn't realistic to expect 7.0 60's from a catcher. The truth is that there aren't that many High School players, regardless of position, that run a sub 7.0 60, that also have many other tools. As a catcher, you need to focus on developing not only your throwing, but even more importantly, becoming a leader on the field. You've got to develop maturity and communication skills, the ability to help your pitchers succeed at their job, and direct the team on the field. Hitting is important, both for average and power. If you can become a good all around catcher who can lead the team, I doubt too many coaches will be overly concerned with your 60 times, unless they are real slow. Your hustle at the catching position is more important than your 60 time. IMO

CubanLefty and 06catcherdad a pretty much on target with their answers, but let me add this, in the Chicago area, public school, or catholic, if you can hit, you will play!!!

My son is an 06 catcher, who took-up that position last year as a freshman. The other catcher on the team had more experience at the time, but wasn't hitting to well. My son was! The coach had a hard time with deciding who to play when. My son volunteered to play in the outfield when he wasn't catching. He played all the time.

My point is that the coach wanted, and needed hitters, and that seems to fit-the-mold up here in the Chicago area with most schools. Hitting!

My son's a catcher and Kevin Schnall (Coastal Carolina) told my son to always try for a perfect game behind the plate. No pass balls for the whole game, and have every block ball fall easily accessible in front of him.

With respect to throws to second, it is all about footwork. The only ones that count are the ones you get the guy out.

Hustle, Hustle, Hustle.

scouts will look at a a 2.0 second or less to second and they will look at a catchers speed close to 7.0 on the 60....if you are wondering why they run the 60 its because thats the distance from scoring position....if you are a catcher work on your fundamentals...scouts really look at fundamentals....how you trap a ball, how you are mentally in a game...how your footwork is behind the plate...how you hide your pitches...how you call a game...just remember that baseball is all mental...i dont know how often hs coaches let there catchers call a game but if you do just remember what the count is...example is never set up down the tube and call a fastball (the good number 1) when the pitcher is up in the count 0-2.... he has pitches to waste and can try to catch the batter to chase one...catching is an important role in the field you are pretty much the leader...if you have any questions just reply back...good luck
