After years of taking low fastballs off of my feet, and witnessing my younger son take one of his older brother's fastballs in the foot the other day, I've come around to a question:

Is there special footwear that catcher's like? Sturdier shoes? Reinforcements and the like? I know umps get some pretty sturdy shoes - anything for catchers??

Agree with Holden. Most shin guards do have an extension “flap” that extends over the top portion of the foot but many catchers, my son included, remove these flaps. The catcher’s foot doesn’t seem to be highly susceptible to injury from foul tips or errant pitches unlike the hands, arms, shoulders, and the inside of the thighs. Besides, catchers "need" a bruise or two to show the girls how tough they are. Big Grin

I'm not aware of any shoes with reinforced toes for catchers. Just wear the shinguards with their extensions IN PLACE, and you'll be fine.

Fungo, as far as having the catchers have a bruise or two...I keep telling my catchers that real catchers don't wear cups. Thank God they don't take me serious Wink. They do think it is cool to show off the seam marks on their arms, especially to the players they think are soft.
