What does the batter get on catcher's interference? I know he gets first base--but how does it go down as an at bat?

Let me get things going here. in the process of hitting the ball fair the catcher tips the bat. ground ball to shortstop who throws the batter runner out. there was a runner at 3rd he scores as a result of the groundball out. what happens???
As I understand it, it is a delayed deadball. You can take the better result from the interference (hitter to 1B, runner stays at 3B) or runner scores and out at 1B.
Sort of like football. You have a choice to decline or accept the penalty. The key here is it is a "delayed" dead ball.
