Had an interesting one today...

Runners on second & third, one out late in the game, offense down by one. Catcher's interference on batter, who hits a ground ball to first base, which scores the run and results in an out. Runner at second reaches third. Blues properly signal the interference, but allow the play to continue.

Umpires call time, awards first base and direct all the runners back to their bases. Offensive coach comes out and asks if he can take the play instead. We're up close, so we can hear the words, something like, "Don't the rules say I can take the play if I want?" Umpire shruggs and basically ignores him. He has a moment of indecision and then just says, "I'll take that as a no..." and walks off. Next batter GIDP and they lose by one.

Question, I didn't help the guy because he was the opposition, but what should the umpire do? This was actually a softball game at the 14U level, not a HS baseball game (in full disclosure), but it seemed to me the umpire didn't answer the question.

I realize its up to the coaches to know the rules (6.08 (c) in OBR for this one) but if the question is asked, how should you answer? In this case, given the situation, if I'd have been in charge, I would've said something like, "So you're electing to take the play, correct?" and let him answer yes or no.

Curious situation.

When the batter was put out, they were correct to award him 1st base and return the other runners. But when the coach came out asking for the result of the play, they should have given it to him. Had the coach protested the game, the protest should have been upheld.
