Ron Maurer at Richmond Baseball Academy South is a former UNC and pro SS who was one of the few guys who were showcased playing all 9 positions in a MiLB game. He seems to do well with catchers.
I know in years past i have sent guys to a man Dan Horn who i believe is now running the Richmond baseball academy in mechanicsville i think. He was excellent.
Patrick Nichols ODU 2006 and Washington Nationals (06 to current) offers catching instruction thru Gary Lavelle at Complete Game in Chesapeake, VA. Patrick will be available after his season...approximately Sept. 15.
Dan Horn can teach catching; I've watched him run catchers through drills some years ago (He was a coach with the Central Virginia Sting for a few years), and the man certainly knows what he is doing. He's a great hitting instructor as well; both of my sons during their college careers went back to Dan for a "check up" during a slump and he was wonderful. Dan is a no B.S guy, he calls it like he sees it, and you learn that he genuninely loves to work with kids that want to get better. I'd highly recommend him to anyone.
With all due respect to the other coaches, if you live in Northern Virginia, the cream of the crop HAS to be Mark Rueffert. He is the head JV coach at Herndon High School. He caught as a freshman at HHS, started as a freshman at UVA, caught in the Tigers farm system and was a pupil of Wally Horsman. He knows the ins and the outs of the position better than just about anyone. He is, in my opinion, simply not as well known because he doesn't publicize himself very well. He worked with both of my sons at a place called Diamond Sports Training in Sterling, VA and we are glad he did.
Dan Horn is one of the Directors at Richmond Baseball Academy - East. I coached with Dan several years and my friend hokie gave a nice description of our friend Dan. If you don't mind working hard, go see him, if you want it the easy way, stay away.
