Since I’m a “data miner” above all, without that access, 99% of what I do is cut off. And on top of that, if I was to stop using my program now and convert to something else, there’s no way for me to convert my data as well, and that would mean losing 8 years of data, not something I’m willing to do at my age.
So, I’ve run into a couple of issues. #1 I want to change the way I get data into the system, but #2 I want to store it in a way that I can continue to use my old data as well as the new. There’s also another slightly less significant problem in that using this new way to store what actually happened during a game, it will be possible to have many more data points I wasn’t able to have before.
All in all, I’ve been messing with it for a couple weeks now, and to tell the truth its been an extremely interesting puzzle to try to resolve. One of the things I decided to do, was to stop using the “standard” scoring method, and go to one much closer to what those who store game information for MLB uses. It looks very complicated, and it is compared to the “old way”, if you use it. But the truth is, once you get the hang of it, its really pretty simple, and better than that, makes a great deal of common sense.
What’s really interesting about the whole thing is, if you’ve written a computer program you understand how every single thing has to be programmed. Every decision, every mark, every field, every record have to be individually dealt with, and when keeping score, believe me there’s a lot of those things that need to be determined.
Tts really an interesting project, and I know it will keep me bizzy for a long time to come. And if anyone out there has any experience in doing what I’m trying to do, I’m open to any and all suggestions. And for sure I have lots and lots of questions that I have to answer by brute force, and wouldn’t mind cheating a bit if the possibility arose.
