Look into a prepaid plan. There aren't any long term commitments. If you stop paying the service ends when the money expires or at the drop dead date a few months out. Get a prepaid plan from the same provider as your kids. All the calls between you and them will be free.

Here's the link to Verizon. There are Verizon stores all over the place and at any mall.

Verizon prepaid

ATT Wireless has stores everywhere too.

Att Go Plan

There are newer Pay As You Go companies like Metro PCS, Cricket and Boost. I've heard the coverage and connections can be spotty in places.
If you are going to reuse a phone from overseas, just make sure it is what is called a triband or Quadband phone.

The US uses different frequencies than the rest of the world for GSM. Most phone these days support 3 or 4 sets of frequencies which means they work basically everywhere - but some older/cheaper phones only support 1 or 2 frequencies which may make using them in the US a little difficult.

Essentially, it is something like this:

GSM 900 / GSM 1800 MHz - most of the world
GSM 850 / GSM 1900 MHz - US, Mexico, South America and Canada

Hope this helps
