Baseball games today will get postponed only if more rains hits The Diamond's field. In that event, games will be moved to Hanover today.

As of right now, Central Region baseball is still on at 3 p.m. at The Diamond

I just got an email alert that the second game will start at 5:30pm today.
Early game today was a classic Cosby playoff victory, as they squeaked by a tough Dinwiddie team, 2-0.

Ryan Bickford walked the tightrope for four innings, allowing 8 runners to reach but stranding all of them before yielding to Michael Carpenter. Carpenter also had a fair number of runners aboard and some hard hit outs, but somehow Dinwiddie never scored.

Two Dinwiddie baserunning errors were killers.

A single and two walks actually had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the first. After a K, Colton Gunn absolutely jacked a ball to LF and I thought it was going to be a grand slam, but in typical Diamond fashion, the ball died just short and was caught. Dinwiddie's runner at third for some reason had headed down the line and slipped trying to go back, so he didn't score. With 2 outs, Bickford got a grounder to escape without damage. That turn of events pretty much changed everything about how this game might have gone.

Dinwiddie also missed a later chance to score in the 5th, when a potential DP grounder was thrown away, but ricocheted off the concrete wall to to allow Cosby ot nail the batter trying to advance to 2nd. That killed another scoring opportunity and that was pretty much it for Dinwiddie on offense.

Cosby got its first run in the 4th when slugger Luke Lowery led off with a perfect bunt hit, took third on a single by Hunter Williams, then scored when Brad McKay just barely beat the relay on what might have been an inning-ending DP.

The only other run scored when a Cosby runner stole 2nd in the top of the 7th on a third strike for the 2nd out. The batter walked right in front of the catcher and the throw sailed into shallow CF. I was amazed that no one even protested the lack of an interference call. A.J. Nicely then lined an RBI triple just past the diving CF. Both Cosby runs scored on plays that were each decided by inches.

Despite those plays, the player of the game was Gunn. He came very close to pitching a shutout, and even returned to the mound after a nasty collision with his 3B while they were both going for a popped up bunt. He appeared in significant pain but not only returned to the mound, he remained tough to the finish. He also doubled in addition to what should have been a sac fly (and that came just a hair from being a grand slam that would've changed everything). His double also involved a hard slide. This kid did everything you could ask of anyone to try to win this game and it's a shame it didn't happen, but he made a strong impression for sure.
Later game came down to pitching depth. Things got a little shaky for James River at the finish but not until after Matoaca had tried maybe 5 different arms en route to a 9-5 win for JR.

Jack Roberts got his third appearance of the season and came out smoking, hitting 92-93 before settling in around 89-90 through the first three innings. Matoaca did get one run in each of the 2nd and 3rd innings in spite of Roberts' good stuff. In the 2nd, Kyle Vass hit a blast that bounced off the wall in RCF for a double. Alex Smith lined a clean single to bring him in. In the 3rd, an infield hit and a clean bunt hit were followed by a WP. A fly to center saw a runner down the third base line for the second time today, did not score then. After a HBP, a grounder to first got the second out but the 1B couldn't throw because he had no angle around the batter-runner.

James River cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the 3rd when a one-out walk was followed, on a hit-and-run play, by a Cullen Large liner to CF that was misplayed into a triple. (Charitable scoring; I would've said single + error.) JR played it conservatively on a shallow fly to left, then Large was kept from scoring when Travis Lodge nipped Cole Bushby at first on a bang-bang play following a slow roller to to SS hole. (Can't say as I agreed with the call really.)

In the 4th, Roberts seemed to run out of gas and it took two nice plays by 3B Mac Caples to prevent any scoring. In the bottom, Caples singled, Roberts doubled, Michael Trentham got a sac fly and Nate Kirby doubled to make it 3-2 James River. And then began the parade of arms to the mound for Matoaca, as they searched in vain for someone with enough left from Monday's game to get to the end. Trentham had another RBI in the 5th on a clean single. Roberts added a hot liner that Lodge dove for and got his chest on, but the ball caromed into the outfield for a 2-run double. Trentham followed with yet another hit for 2 more RBI (total of 4 for the game) and suddenly it was 9-3.

Tyler Carrico pitched the last 3 for JR and actually got the win though he struggled in the 5th and 7th. The game was actually tied 3-3 after Michael Birdsong's 2-out RBI hit in the 5th, which gave Roberts a no decision. Wildness gave Matoaca a bit of hope in the 7th but it ended 9-5.

I thought overall that JR wore Matoaca down and played a pretty solid game defensively. They will need to turn up the juice in their attack to win what promises to be a higher scoring affair tomorrow night, or to go further next week.

In the all-Dominion finale, Cosby and James River will match up for the fourth, though possibly not the final, time this year.

I would think Kirby, Roberts and Carrico are all out of the question for JR, so look for Trey Rose to start, probably see Lanzillotti and Caples before it's done.

Cosby has also used Williams, Carpenter and Bickford enough that none should pitch tomorrow. Look for Day, Flanagan, Gohlke and Byrd to get their chances.
Looking back, I do want to congratulate our Virginia Cardinals pitchers on a fine week in regional play:

Daniel Bridgeman, CG shutout/2 hitter for Dinwiddie over Atlee
Nathan Kirby, 6 2/3 in win over Hermitage, 1 R, 10 K's
Tyler Carrico, winning pitcher in semifinal/state qualifier vs. Matoaca
Ryan Bickford, 4 shutout innings and the W in semifinal/state qualifier vs. Dinwiddie
Daniel Byrd, 5 1/3 with only 2 hits, 1 unearned run for the W in the regional championship game vs. James River

And in this same vein, though in another region (AA Region II), a shout out to Powhatan's Joe Manion for going 6 2/3 shutout innings with 15 K's for the W over Millbrook in the quarterfinal game on Tuesday. Tanner Phillips closed with a 3-pitch K in that one as well.
