caught Cosby v Clover Hill and JRHS v Monacan tonight. Both the Rapids and the Titans are starting to click and the April 17th collision between the two is positively mouth-watering.

If both roll their hot hands out there a Kirby v Bickford match-up could be the best head to head pitchers battle (on paper anyway) since Ronnie Shaban and Tyler Wilson used to lock horns 5 years ago.

Of course, there's always the chance that neither team will throw either one of these guys but it's nice to dream :-)

ColonialBaseball4 aaid......Patrick Henry got a big 2-0 win at home against Douglas Freeman. Kyle Palmer pitched a complete game. The Patriots improve to 6-1 overall and are now in first place in the Colonial District with a record of 4-1.

I've been watching Kyle Palmer strike kids out since he was 9. He knows how to pitch. Kyle is a tough kid to square up because he changes speed and location very, very effectively. Congrats to Kyle and PH. That is a good win.

What is the Vegas line on the game? I've got Cosby by whisker. Will James River offer valet parking at their new complex? Am I jealous....absolutley!

Yes, that is a big win for Bird.
The James River game was probably the best I have ever seen Kirby pitch, and I've seen him plenty. He established early that he could strike you out if he wanted to, then he used that to his advantage to shift to contact outs. This is not something he would do in the past. The result was that he got through 4 perfect, though it took some fine defense to get there, especially from 2B Paul Wood, who made I think 3 very nice plays on slow infield rollers for outs.

The RTD actually reported the game as a 5-inning no-hitter. In the 5th, there was one walk and then a slow roller to SS where the throw went wide. Apparently the home score keeper called it an error, but the consensus from those of us in the stands was infield hit. Still, the frequency of weak grounders, coupled with only one walk in 5 innings, shows how much in command of the game Kirby was. Consistently 90-91 on his fastball and his slider was 80-81.

That thing is just flat out filthy. People always love to get into fastball speed, and Kirby has plenty, but it's the slider that's making the pro scouts come out in droves and then drool. Not many guys can get their breaking pitch into the 80's, and those who do tend to be in MLB and names you recognize -- guys like Felix Hernandez or Stephen Strasburg.
