Hey Blue!

I was watching MLB TV last night about the Best 9 in the 1950s. I noticed in some of the old baserunning clips that the base bag would throw up some chalk when the baserunner hit the bag. Presumably this was to help the umpire make a call? Is this the case, when did they stop doing it, and why? Thanks.

Like Mike, Im not aware that they deliberately chalked the bases, but I am positive that the bases back then were canvas sack-type squares....stuffed with some sort of material....

And at the local field where I went as a kid they often whitewashed them to make them white(r)......I'd bet the fly up is more inflield dust from the bags then it was chalk.....
