A player that I know is thinking about switching from his four year school to a junior college. He plans on finishing the fall semester at the four year school then playing for the juco team in the spring. He has a full tuition scholarship at the four year school. When he tells the school that he is not coming back to the school and playing for them in the spring, will their scholarship still cover him for the fall semester?

The D1 rule permitting a cancellation of scholarship includes: (15.3.4.2)
(d) Voluntarily (on his or her own initiative) withdraws from a sport at any time for personal reasons; however, the recipient’s financial aid may not be awarded to another student-athlete in the academic term in which the aid was reduced or canceled. A student-athlete’s request for written permission to contact another four-year collegiate institution regarding a possible transfer does not constitute a voluntary withdrawal.

So he needs to be careful about when he announces his decision, because the aid could be lost if he is deemed to have withdrawn from baseball.
