Stupid stupid stupid. I'm a public school guy, and hate the multiplier for any sport. I'm not sure of the numbers now, but when I was in school there were key starters at Brother Rice, Mt. Carmel, St. Laurence, St. Rita, and Marist from my town that would have gone to my school if there weren't private schools for them to go to. No complaints from us. Many of us might not have gotten the chance to play if not for the Catholic "recruiting." When will people learn to just deal with it and play ball? It made us better ball players and allowed us to enjoy the game. Yeah we played to win, but if we lost we didn't go pointing our fingers at the privates, saying that we would have won with the guys that were from our district that played for them. Plus it was nice to play well against those guys. Made for many interesting games.

4 classes? Stupid unless they want to make championship series for each round of the playoffs, or more than a one and done in the finals. Why not make baseball playoffs more like football, you need a certain winning pct. to get into the playoffs. Leave it at two classes, though.

Seriously, one of these days these kids will need to learn that not everything in life is fair, and not everybody can be a winner. Last I checked they gave participation trophies in rec. t-ball, not high school state tournaments.

Just another bonehead move by the IHSA...IMO...
CCKnights, we were elimiated in extra innings by a private school in the Super-Sectional game. (Sacred Heart Griffin) Great team and a great game. I'd love to play that game again. No sour grapes here. The better team on that day won. I was an assistant at Edwardsville when we beat Joliet Catholic for the State Title a few years ago. Again, Great team and great game. Having said all of this, the multiplier issue won't die in this state. JMHO! 4-Classes will also bring up another issue. I have a thread in the coaching forum about district play. I'm not certain but I seem to recall someone once posting that district play ended conference play in some states. That is a different can of worms that might be opened. Again, JMHO!
Back here in the Northeast some states require a certain winning percentage to get into the end of season playoffs---others allow just about everybody in using the excuse of "more ball games" due to the short regular season.

CC --could not agree more that there comes a time when kids have to learn about losing and nthat life is not fair-- if they thing life is un fair in theior teens wait til they get to into the real world of working for a living and paying bills
As a player on a catholic school team. i think the multiplier is ridiculous. My school was forced to play a AA schedule for all the fall sports.then half the fall sports stayed in AA, and half went to A. As far as baseball is concerned we made it to state last year (unfortunately we drew Wilimington in Quarterfinals). We have a lot of talent again this year and a possibitity to return to state, unless we are forced to play AA.

In conclusion, this is insane and the whole thing should just be thrown out the window. There is no way you can count people as 1.65 of a person.

Had to get that out.
Four classes in baseball is just as stupid as all of those classes in football.

MEANINGLESS STATE CHAMPIONS for schools that have 300 students. Most of those kids couldn't even make varsity rosters at bigger schools, let alone play.

Why not just have as many classes as you have students in a school? That way, everyone can be a State champion!

Ridiculous!
I think that the 2 class system is fine. I don't think a State Championship for a school with 300 students is ridiculous. The idea that only the big schools should have an opportunity at such a thing is ridiculous......the kids in the smaller towns should have something to play for as well. No one said that winning the Class A Championship means a team is as good as the big schools...but so what? I do agree that having anything close to the 8 classes of football is ridiculous....all baseball teams have a chance to play in the playoffs...the multiple class playoffs in football are there partially to allow more teams to participate.
The multiplier is an arbitrary figure used to adjust the enrollment in private schools ... some of which aren't co-ed, most of which have low enrollment.

It is a big deal in football because it makes Mt. Carmel and JCA (and Providence, etc. etc.) play "up" vs. schools that are more competitive. It sort of neutralizes the ability to recruit.
Or the boys or girls golf teams at U-High in Normal. Girls won the single class tournament, while the boys defending Class A state champs were bumped up by the multiplier this year to AA, but still beat New Trier by a stroke for the AA state title.

Sorry all, I know its a baseball site(best one on the internet)but a little golf never hurt anyone.
Gotwood: No one did say it. And I didn't say that it did. Wilmington had a great team with the pitchers and catcher they had.....could have beaten anyone with Rourke pitching (not would have.) I was just saying that the kids who win the Class A title don't have anything to prove to the big schools....winning Class A is a great accomplishment.

As far as the golf goes, the smaller the team the less difference it makes how big the school is...especially if you happen to have 2-3 really good players. Hebron won the basketball title in the 50's in spite of being a really tiny school. All they needed were 5 students...especially if they were the Judson twins, the 7 footer and a couple of other nice players.
FastballDad:

I was just being my regular, wise *ss, self. You know way more about this stuff than I do! Smile

Bottom line is that you and I are each correct and respectful about Wilmington...that was a very good baseball team...regardless of how they were classified by the IHSA.

My son's travel team went down to Wilmington and played that talented bunch about 4 or 5 years ago...we played 'em close but Wilmington prevailed. I didn't know at the time just how much this bunch was going to accomplish...at several different sports.

After talking with some of their dads during that game they said that this bunch had been playing together since they were 5 or 6 years old. Boy did they make the most of it!
