I have cut and pasted from an article about Danny Diekroger from Stanford. He was lightly recruited out of High School, in part probably because he was an all State quarterback with an older brother who overshadowed him on the diamond. At Stanford, Danny used his bat to squeeze into the line up about 1/2 way through his freshman year. Since then, he has been a starting 2B, played other positions, and this year is the starting 1B.
In my view, no matter what the level, parents and players should read this and try it on for size:
"Marquess broached the subject about shifting positions at the end of the fall and Diekroeger, who played shortstop at Menlo as a senior, sacrificed himself for the good of the team.
"He's the coach, I'm the player and I'll play wherever he puts me," said Diekroeger, who has one more class left next quarter before graduating with a degree in computer science. "I heard somewhere that the best way to succeed is whatever job they put you at, just become the best at that. So if they make you the paperboy in the office, then become the best paperboy you can be. So right now I'm just trying to be the best first baseman that I can be."
