Someone forget to tell the players that they were expected not to get a lot of runs with the new bats.

James Madison racked up 37 runs on Bucknell, UNC Wilmington 20 on Jacksonville.

FSU's 12 runs wasn't unusual, LSU 15,UCIrvine 17,Charlotte 18,Southern 19, NCstate 17.

I can't remember seeing such high scores as I have this first day of D1 baseball.

Are the hitters that good or the pitching that bad?
I attended the UC Irvine game versus Nevada today and watched the Anteaters put 17 runs on the board. The pitching for the Wolfpack was okay, but they were pitching behind in the count and UCI took advantage. I was surprised the game went the full 9 innings, as it was cold and raining nearly the entire game. If the Anteaters pitching can hold up this year, they're going to make some noise, they have some sticks. I was eager to watch Matt Summers pitch for UCI. I wasn't sitting by the radar guns, but he was easily in the mid 90's. Unfortunately, he stuggled with his command and couldn't make it out of the 3rd inning. If Summers can throw strikes, he'll be tough to beat...I hope he figures it out.

Out of the 21 runs scored in this game, the one dinger came from the Wolfpack, a solo shot. I still think the BBCOR bats are going to change the game dramatically over the course of the season, but it's hard to believe after reading some of the scores that TPM posted.
Early in the season hitting has got the advantage over pitching. Starters haven't hit their groove and are prone to blowing up early. Then it's a patchwork of other relievers so it's easy to run into somebody who is not having a good day. Weather is often a factor. For instance, the Bucknell game was played with a stiff wind (10 mph) blowing out to left center. The Bisons starter went 1/3 inning and gave up seven hits, eight runs while facing nine batters. Six other pitchers followed and only the last one was able to stop the bleeding by then it was a softball game. Bucknell is a fine academic school with high standards. I know a very fine family whose kid started his medical career at Bucknell and was on the track and field team. Just a wonderful contributor to everything that is good about the United States. From what I've been told about the bats if the team relies on power to get it done, then expect a reduction in production.
