The question of "when is ok to plunk a kid" brought me to post this.  I was going to do it, then decided not to....now have decided to again....just because it was so pathetic that maybe it will get back to the team that did it.  Just so you know....nobody got plunked....lol

Last Saturday DH against an area smaller school.  First game....we win 8-3...not much from the dugout.

2nd game...completely different....not sure why, but they scored a few early, we had an inning with 4 errors and they just started going berserk.

When they were batting, they would start clapping from the dugout, just as our pitcher was stepping onto the mound.  Ok with that...though pretty childish for a HS game.  Just as the pitcher was finishing his throwing motion and getting ready to release the ball, one kid (same kid the entire game) would let out a high pitched half second scream.  Never heard this in a HS game....and according to the rule book, I don't believe it's legal per the section on sportsmanship/taunting/etc.  They did it for one inning.  Next inning...they didn't scream...we assumed the ump told them to knock it off.  Started again next inning....then started to include screams after the pitch...based on the location, ball, in the dirt, etc....and got to the point that it was worse than any 8 year old softball game.

We changed pitchers down 10-5...and brought in a soph with limited pitching experience.  When he would come to the set position with runners on base, he has a very deliberate movement...that frankly is a little bit much...but it's what he does...kind of like Kershaw.,..where his hands go up above his head..then come down.  The opponents really started in on him...EVERY time he went into the motion they would start heckling him in any number of ways...screamsing, whistles, etc. Again, according to the rulebook...absolutely illegal as it's directed directly at a player.  No different than a kid on the foul lane hecking the FT shooter.   As we were walking out I mentioned to the umpires tha although they called a good game, both on the bases and behind the plate the fact that they allowed the taunts was completely wrong. The response was a smirk and "no idea what you're talking about".    I know a family whose son played there...and is now playing at a D1 college.  Her response was "our league teams all do that".  Based on conversations after the game, it's probably the last time we're going to play them....it was that ridiculous.

Here is the section I'm referring to.  I would say they violated every one of these..

g. commit any unsportsmanlike act to include, but not limited to,
1. use of words or actions to incite or
attempt to incite spec
tators demonstrations,
2. use of profanity, intimidation tactics, remar
ks reflecting unfavorably upon any other person, or
taunting or baiting. The NFHS disapproves of any
form of taunting that is intended or designed to
embarrass, ridicule or demean others under circumst
ances including race, religion, gender or national
origin.
3. use of any language intended to intimidate,

4. behavior in any manner not in accordance with the spirit of fair play

I hate to tell you but college is worse but in a different way.  It is coming from the stands and it is brutal from drunken college students.  College students have smart phones and an opposing player's whole life is accessible including mothers, grandmothers and sisters names.  God help you if you are in a hitting slump because those students will remind you or ask you why you're hitting .225 or why you've gone 2 for 20 in your last ABs.   My advice would be to learn how to deal with it, now.

If he goes on to play in college, this will be a warm up for what awaits him with under-the-influence college students in the stands during a mid-week game.   Once you've witnessed that....then anything coming out of a high school dugout will seem like nothing.   So, take him to a college game.  ;-)

My wife and I HAD TO move our seats at a recent mid-week college game in our hometown due to language....and I'm not easily offended.   High school games are tame (bleating sheep included) compared to the next level.

Fan are one thing...obviously fans can yell and scream all they want....even in HS.  This was coming from the dugout...not the stands.  I have been to college games..and pro games.  The stadiums are bigger, the fans are further away and the players probably don't hear as much of that stuff as you think.  Coming from a HS dugout 40-50' away from the pitcher is completely different.

Totally agree with Fenway's remarks.  We have been attending games at the college my son will play for next year and were surprised when we experienced exactly what Fenway described in the stands.  Not only did we witness jeering from the stands for the opposing team, but there were students who went out behind the OF fence to torment the players in the out field.  Our son's response was, you can't let anybody get in your head; I hope he remembers this next year.

At the college level most of this stuff comes from the fans and some of it can be very creative. If your son has not made all of their social media private they should do so.....however I Have seen where opposing fans are "facebook friends" (kids even if they are private can still have 2000-3000 "facebook Friends") allowing them access to all of their social media.

One game every time a batter stuck out the crowd would say as the batter walked back to the dugout....left, right, left, right and right when they go to the dugout they would shout "sit the F down"......I agree that you need to forget about and it and play through it at the high school level but I still hate it and respect the high school coaches and teams that do not resort this kind of tactic.

Similar post not too long ago.  I believe the consensus was that nobody was a fan of it, but not much to do, except as mentioned, tune it out.  Best revenge is beating them, the more runs the better.

Although it still exists, I do think there is a distinction between screams coming from the dugout from players, versus fans.  Fans get a pass in my book, players should respect the game, and themselves more.

I have always thought this was a very direct reflection of the coach, and certainly not in a very favorable manner.  I never allowed this from our dugout, and would be very disappointed if any coach Jr. played for was a fan of it.  Play the game, let your skills decide whether you are better, and act like you've been there before.

Exactly our thoughts....my son has never played for a coach that would allow that stuff (even as young as 8U)...you just don't do it.  My son even commented after the game that if his HS team tried to pull that stuff and their coach allowed it he would be so embarassed to be a part of it that he wouldn't play for that coach.  I guess unless you were there you don't realize how ridiculous it was. It got into our pitchers head a little (he's a soph, pitching varsity for the first time)....but our other players basically laughed at them because they were making such a joke of themselves.  Pretty pathetic...and I hope none of you have to sit thru it....lol

How so...

I've noticed in college it's worse when u visit field where they sell liquor. A nine inning game can take awhile and once people get a few beers in them they get more vocal. Sometimes its parents of players which I find embarrassing for the player.

Any HS coach who condones yelling during pitch has a problem IMO. You can cheer on your teammates but to act classless makes the school look bad. Our AD would never allow that to continue.

Civility seems to be lacking lately. Take for ex the lady who threw her shoe at Hillary Clinton. Who does that? Just because you don't agree with her politics doesn't mean you loose your mind.

many behaviors do not surprise me anymore.

A few years back, we had a HS district opponent  that yelled and screamed from the dugout whenever they were at bat.  Yes, it was annoying, but after a while I just toned it out.

As to college, I guess we have been fortunate.  We've attended both home and away games of my son's JuCo team and I've never heard anything like mentioned above.
