I hesitate to write this, as this board has seen its fair share of tragedy over the past few weeks. However, I think it is important that we remind ourselves that our time with our children can be fleeting.

Today marks the beginning of our official games during the Baylor Medical Classic at GHS, CHHS, FRHS & KHS and also marks the anniversary of Chris Gavora’s tragic accident during pre-game warm-up prior to our first game last season.

The accident was well chronicled on this board and elsewhere, and support, prayers, and well wishes came from around the city, state and country. During this tournament all proceeds from gate, concession, and donations at GHS and all donations from the other venues, will go to the Chris Gavora Memorial Scholarship Fund. Additionally, the GHS booster club, coaches, and administrators have established a fitting memorial at the Ballpark for Chris and if you are ever in the area please drop by and see it (I have a picture of it, but could not figure out how to include it in my post.)

I suspect you will see a post like this from me every year at this time (at least for the next 5 while my sons are playing HS baseball.) I don’t write on behalf of the Gavora’s or GHS Baseball, but on behalf of all fathers who love their sons and love watching them play sports. Take a moment to kiss them, hug them, wave, high five, call, send a text, whatever…but let them know how you feel.

Thanks Cobra21,

My sons team was taking the field for warmups getting ready to play that first game when this tragedy happened. Although my son no longer plays for Lake Dallas, there will always be a special place in our heart for Chris and his family. We realize that every day we have with our son is special.

God bless the Gavora family and may he protect them from this day forward.

It was a very heartfelt moment last night when Chris’ family presented Rory Meyers with the Tournament MPV Award. It was hard to find anyone without a tear in their eye. At the time I couldn’t help thinking that one of baseballs greatest gifts is that the spirit and memory of all who have played the game will continue to live on as long as the game does.

I hope Chris' family felt the love the community sent with this tribute.

I spoke with Bill yesterday, the Gavora family is very thankful for all of the love and support they have received not only this past weekend, but for the past year as they have tried to deal with the tragedy. Please continue to keep them in your prayers.
