Remember the song “We wish you a Merry Christmas”?
And of course... a “Happy New Year”!
I saw a commercial today that changed the words to “We wish you a Happy Holidays”! Mad

I forgot what the product being advertised was, but if I see it again, I’ll write down the name and never ever buy that product. Or maybe I’ll call them and tell them I want to buy their product for a CHRISTMAS present. Then tell them I’ve changed my mind seeing they don’t recognize CHRISTMAS.

For well over 50 years I’ve been led to believe December 25th is CHRISTMAS. I have nothing against holidays, but my favorite holiday is CHRISTMAS. People are going overboard on this stuff.

After reading the thread about favorite CHRISTMAS songs and in order to be PC here are my favorite CHRISTMAS songs.

1. White HOLIDAY
2. Blue HOLIDAY
3. Have Yourself a Merry Little HOLIDAY
4. I’ll Be Home For HOLIDAY
5. The HOLIDAY Song
6. Holly Jolly HOLIDAY
7. Merry HOLIDAY Baby
8. 12 Days of HOLIDAY
9. Silver Bells “It’s HOLIDAY Time in The City.
10. Please Come Home For Holiday

Here’s wishing everyone a Merry CHRISTMAS. Is it OK to still say Happy New Year?

PG,

How about "Oh Holiday Tree?" And on that foggy Holiday Eve, does Santa still go to Rudolph?

Obviously it has everything to do with major retailers not offending a single potential customer. In our town, there was a hugh battle over whether a Christmas Tree, which was placed in a park in midtown for half a century and called a Christmas Tree, would be renamed a Holiday Tree. Battles in town council chambers and everything. It was decided not to change the name, but there were hard feelings between religious groups over the situation.

What a world!

And to all, a very Merry Christmas!!!
PG, I agree wholeheartedly! PC running amok!!

Here's a list of some offenders from the American Family Association website.

BTW, if we do have some who are offended by CHRISTMAS I'm glad to see they are keeping it to themselves. (See Christmas songs/Christmas movies posts.)

Never ceases to amaze me how some want to be PC, yet have no qualms about discriminating against a clear majority who do believe in the true REASON FOR THE SEASON.

One of the reasons that I love A Charlie Brown Christmas so much is because it tells the story of Christmas. I literally had tears in my eyes watching it on TV this year, thinking that today it never would have been made, and wondering how it is allowed to be shown on TV every year. I suppose it's just a matter of time....

There is a radio station in Chicago that started playing "Christmas" music on November 19 and will continue until December 25, but I can't listen to it. Sure it's Christmas songs, but no "carols". Lots of Rudolph and Santa Baby and Frosty, but not very many angels or baby Jesus...

FrankF: Thanks for the AFA website, and thanks for helping me to plan my holiday Christmas shopping!

"I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year." Charles Dickens

Merry Christmas.

I actually did a sermon a couple weeks ago on being "Correctly Politically Incorrect" (new 11th commandment:never give a lawyer an open mike or a pulpit, or both) and in working on it found the following:

-A British town officially now calls it "Winterval", not Christmas.
-Nestles is advertising "Holiday Cookie Cutters", not Christmas cookie cutters.
-Sunday Washington Post glossy color ads, of which there were zillions-99% referred to "holiday", not Christmas.
-Lowes advertised "Holiday Trees"
-Little Rock, Arkansas has a "Holiday Parade"
-When President Bush lit the National Christmas tree, he mentioned it was a time to "remember the story of one humble life that lifted the sights of humanity...Santa, thanks for coming!"

I also was interested in finding that when I traced complaints about the use of "Christmas", when the source could be found, none came from Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, or Hindus, but rather the complaints originated normally with athiests or agnostics.

To the Christians, I wish you a Merry Christmas. To non-Christians, since there really are no other largely significant religious holidays this time of year (even Hannukah isn't considered a major holiday by Jews), I wish you a very pleasant December.

And we're only a little over two months until Pitchers and Catchers Report Day!

You reap what you sow.

In an attempt NOT to offend a SINGLE customer --- they end up offending MOST of their customers.

How is that for an idiotic marketing plan.

PG, I REALLY like your idea of telling them you were going to buy their product as a CHRISTMAS present, but since they don't recognize CHRISTMAS.....

Merry Christmas !!!!

I agree and I am someone who does not celebrate Christmas. To those who do, I wish a very merry Christmas. To everyone, wish a healthy, safe, peaceful and prosperous year.

What you see with most of the so-called political correctness is companies trying to reach as broad a market as possible without affending anyone. However, as I recall, the holiday is, and should be, more than a retail holiday. It is a very significant holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Those who celebrate the holiday (including those advertisers and companies promoting the "holidays") should also remember this.

I can't speak for every Jewish person in this country, but for one, I still think of that beautifully decorated tree as a Christmas Tree...a holiday tree???? come on...please.
I don't understand why anybody would be offended by the mention of Christmas. I don't belong to any specific religius order, but I appreciate it when someone says "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Chanukah" or "Good Kwanzaa" to me. What's wrong with someone offering you a blessing? Why would you want to prevent someone from wishing you well?? Bizarre.

And it wouldn't hurt to consider your blessings during Ramadan, either, or any time of year for that matter.

Peace.
On an early morning news show they were talking about a prominent Jewish newsletter coming out and telling it's readers not to fall into the pc trap. It went on to say that Xmas is a Christian Holiday and how they want to promote and celebrate it is thier business.

I thought that was about as classy as it gets.
I have been watching this thread and decided to comment. Because of recent Wilma, have not been paying attention to all of this.
I do not celebrate Christmas, don't go overboard on Hanukkah, but I have always enjoyed this time of the year (except no snow here to get you in the mood). I do not believe that all of this came about because one group in particular felt left out, but may have been brought about by those who do not believe in anything, want the word g-d stricken from everywhere the word is, etc. Unfortunetly it is a sign of the times we live in and what's happended just fuels the fire and divides many. No political discussions.

What is important and seems to be forgotten is that so many people in this country are unable enjoy the christmas, holiday season, new year. The recent hurricanes, tornados, floods have taken an economic toll in some areas as well as human toll. Regardless of what the season means to you, be thankful to have a roof over your head, a job and your family together.

The true meaning of the Christmas, holiday season for me is the spirit in which you embrace it, peace and kindness towards others, whether you celebrate it by way of Christmas, Hanukkah (not a major holiday by the way, just for retailers), Kwansaa, etc. It shouldnot matter whether thecommercial says Christmas or Holidays, but that is JMO.
This year we have decided to donate to others who have been less fortunate instead of giving gifts.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy and a healthy New Year.
Peace.
Tiger Paw Mom:

No snow? We've got plenty. Send an 18 wheeled dump truck, a front-end loader with a competent cold-weather operator (can you imagine me out there in the cold with that diesel powered behemoth?) and enough 'Toll' money to get back to Florida.

Just let us know.

If you happen to take us up on this, all I can wish you...aside from Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah...is happy slow speed sledding...Florida not being known for its sweeping slopes!
TPM,

Nice post.

But, deep down you are feeling cheated about the weather. In the holiday spirit I am officially inviting you to WI to help me shovel my driveway, take the dog for a couple 0 degree walks, and then we will spend an evening with our backs against the wind and fish through the ice. It's the least I can do.

No thank you is necessary, after all it is the holidays.

Cool

I've found the Keep Christmas Out of The Holidays discussion in the media amusing. There's been a celebration at this time of the year forever -- whether it was called Winter Solstice, Yule, Saturnalia -- that was why this time was chosen to mark the important Christian celebration of Christmas. Most of our Christmas decorations and associations go back much, much further than 2,000 years.

The PC wackos have (most assuredly) unintentionally returned the season to its roots. Wink
It twas the night before Holiday and all through the house.

We used to open our holiday presents on Holiday eve!

The thing that bothers me is that Christmas is such a big thing for so many young kids. That's why people ask them what they would like for Christmas. Christmas is all about kids! It's great to see their faces light up. I'd like to see sales fall drastically this year at all the non-Christmas stores. Bet that would get them all back in the CHRISTMAS spirit for next year.
Tiger Paw Mom:

Without the cold? That would take all of the fun and merriment out of it...why do that? Sleigh-bells only work when you're shivering.

Without the cold you would just have a large, shallow puddle...not too festive.

Do they still sell Ivory soap flakes...if so, they might do...no cold to deal with and when you're done the neighborhood is spic-n-span!
