Chronic hamate pain (not broken)...

I'm still wrestling if he's losing a season or not?

This is the way it was explained to me when he transferred from the D2 to the Juco after the fall semester: You have a 5-year or ten-semester "clock" (5-years in NCAA D1, 10 semesters of full-time attendance at other four year college levels) in which you have 4 seasons of eligibility to compete in baseball.  

So, if since he's not playing now for the Juco this spring, then he will have 4-years or 8 semesters in which to play his Spring seasons of competitive eligibility? Is that right?

It's a D3 Juco so there's no official red shirt, as far as I know.

Get a consult with Rick or another person who specializes in this for advice. For the cost of what's likely a very short consult. Seems very well worth it. Personally I'd want someone that I could call/txt with questions that may be time sensitive.

Surgery scheduled for the end of the month. That's the first available time. Should be able to play a few weeks before the summer college league starts.

Godspeed on your son's recovery. What bat is he looking at for the summer?

Thanks. Bat is still TBD. I don't think he's really thought it through yet. I suggested the SPRINGER4 and he declined it.

Son had surgery two weeks ago. Just got the stitches out today. And, the doctor told him no lifting and no hitting, at all, for the next 6 weeks. That would be 8 weeks after surgery to START hitting or lifting. Does that sound right? (For the record, surgery went well and healing so far is without complication.)

Not in our case, ours was told 4-6 weeks to be back, about to be 2 weeks tomorrow, doing hand and wrist ROM and strengthening, was cleared to lift(not with the weight directly in the affected hand) as soon as the cast was off. DR predicted would be able to begin to swing in another week/week and a half )underload bat) and progress. Should be able to start throwing again (L/R hitter) next week

2 weeks after stitches came out and 4 weeks after the surgery, he's taking BP and says the hand feels fine. So much for waiting.

I think my kid is joining this club. He switched to the goods for this season and I doubt he taped up the handle. He complained of hand pain last night and is getting an x-ray today.

@2022NYC Sorry to hear it, did he feel a sensation of something breaking or "letting go in is hand"? Personally dealt with this last season, had hand pain for 2 weeks and played through, played NU and broke it and immediately felt the bat sit deeper in my hand and extreme pain

@camb3232 .Thanks for the comment. Like most teenagers, the kid was limited on details and generally reacts to his parents questions like an inquisition. He woke up feeling better but his trainer sent him for an x-ray later this afternoon.

I posted on this thread a year about tapering all my sons bats to avoid hamate aggravation, a year later he's had no issues with it. I suggest doing that especially if he doesn't need surgery.

Lizard Skins makes a rubber bat taper that goes under the grip for about $8. I put one on all his bats, and can tape up to make it bigger if needed for a bigger knob.

Thanks for making me aware of this post. Great info on this thread. My son is scheduled to have surgery next week 5/1. Fortunately he's already committed to college, but wanted to find out how the outcomes were for others.
