This rule interpretation has probably been asked before, but I'm a newbie.... Smile

Catcher's interference is considered E2 -- no issue there. But how do you reconstruct an inning that includes CI? When CI occurs, a runner reaches first base via error -- so if he scores, the run in unearned. But in reconstructing the inning without the error, can you assume an out for the effected batter? If so, then things get easier to score. If not, then the remainder of the inning is important in determining ER.

Here is our scenario:

Walk. 1 on, 0 out.
FC, runner out going to 2B. 1 on, 1 out.
Catchers interference - E2. 2 on, 1 out.
Walk. 3 on, 1 out.
E4, 2 runs score. 2 on, 1 out. <- should have been 2nd out or 3rd out?
K. 2 on, 2 out.
Single, 2 runs score. Unearned. Downhill from there (as is often the case).

Can you help our official scorer? Smile Thanks.

As I see it all runs scored are unearned because the C-I (E-2) would be have to be reconstructed as an out which would give you 2 outs with 1 on. The next walk would be a non factor and the following E-4 would retire the sides withou any runs being scored.
Pantherdad, I know what you're thinking --- "How can it be a real error when the batter hasn't even put the ball in play so how can you assume an out?" It is unique and that’s probably why the rule specifically includes the catcher’s interference. OBR states that: In determining earned runs, the inning should be reconstructed without the errors (which include catcher's interference)
