Does a CIF field require an outfield fence? Looking though section 2 of the NFHS and I dont see anywhere that says a fence is required. Also looking for some feedback from HS teams that use or have played with a portable mound. Does it diminish or take away from the integrity of game at all? any suggestions and responses are appreciated.

Good luck on your first season coach.

Our OF is shared and the fences come down at the end of summer and go back up just before the season and I can tell you it is not the same playing on a field without a fence. You loose the visual of the size of the alleys and a sense of distance. JMPO.

We played a lot of JV and Freshmen games w/o a fence but I can't recall any at the Varsity level. Many HS mounds really stink, I don't like portables, but I guess they would be better than a ****** beat up mound with pot holes. We have a personal fetish at our school for a good mound. Both our JV and Varsity mounds are perfect, thin hard pack clay over bricks.

That all said you can only tackle so much. Pick something to make better this season and then work on the other stuff when you get time and money.

Good Luck!

Not trying to be a jerk guys but why would a high school field not have a dirt mound? What is going on that you need a portable one?

Smaller school that uses the field as both a baseball and football field?

I think he meant that a lot of HS fields aren't properly maintained and the mounds stink. He hates portable mounds but would rather see those than the messed up earthen ones at some high schools.
Definitely have seen jv and freshman fields in our area without outfield fences. Varsity I am trying to recall but I think that a couple schools don't have one or have a large square fence around the entire area making CF probably 1000+ feet away. Fences are nice but if I had to chose one or the other I'd put the money and effort into the mound.

Now that I think about it...I can think of at least 1 HS fields in CA (Bay Area) without fences.

South San Francisco (can't remember park name).

El Camino High?

I think justbb is referring to the baseball field in Orange Park in South San Francisco.
None of the 3 major rule codes require a fence....but they do establish rules regarding fence if they are erected....

NFHS 1-2-5
The recommended distances to the outfield fence are at least 300 feet down the foul lines and 350 feet to deepest center.

NCAA 1-2b
The recommended distances are 330 feet from home to each foul pole and 400 feet to deepest center

OBR 1.04
The minimum allowable distance is 250 feet. The recommended distances are 320 feet from home to each foul pole and 400 feet to deepest center

As to fence height is there is only one....

NFHS and OBR
No provision

NCAA 1-2c
The outfield fence should be at least 6 feet and preferably 8 feet high...

I have a number of schools who have no or partial fencing....
