What is the call if: runner on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, ground ball hit deep in the hole to short stop, short stop fields ball and throws to first where the field umpire calls the runner out. Coach protests and asks plate umpire for his ruling. Home plate umpire says the player was safe due to firstbaseman was off the bag. this is where the clarification is needed. The umpires ruled that both runners on base scored eventhough the runner on second stopped when the field umpire called the runner out. It is my understanding that when he called the runner out (later overruled)that the inning was over and the second run would not have scored. How do you see it? Thanks

PU should not have offered his input but to BU, if and when he asked for it.

But that's not really what you are asking...

If we are talking FED rules, then the power to rectify a situation that results from an umpire's call explicitly exists. In that case, it is simply a matter of what the crew thinks would have happened if the runner was called safe initially. Theoretically, under OBR rules, we could use 9.01c.

Anyway, without actually being there, it is hard to say what the proper outcome should be. The realist in me says that a runner on second is not going to score on a ground ball in the infield, so the probable proper placement would be 3rd. However, maybe there was something different that transpired.

In short, this is something that has to be observed directly to ascertain the proper ruling. More importantly, this shows the need for proper umpire training and execution. PU (based off your post) opened his mouth more than he should have.

I assume that you were at this game. Did BU consult with PU at any time before the call was overturned?
