The only person, that I am aware of, who can lock out a poster is the site owner, if she is not available then moderators make their own call, until she has time to evaluate the situation.

I understand how you feel, so do the moderators, but MN-Mom has a full time job and a family, so she cannot be here 24/7.

I am not sure why some don't just respect what someone else chooses to do in her absence. Sometimes you just got to move on.

I suppose there will be some discussion again about closing threads, but really, there are a lot more important topics available to contribute to at this time.

But please allow us ( the keepers of the sacrid Gong and the Hunters of the Evil Trools ) the chance to Attack and Destroy the Perpetrator, Before you close the thread??

hehe

As TPM says - there are only limited options available to the moderators. I took the one that seemed the best to me at the time - closing the thread. Other choices were to delete the thread or go in and edit the content line by line. I took the option that seemed like it would retain the most value.

Locking out a poster, while certainly appealing at times Smile, is not a power that I have.

RJM, I agree that there are times deleting a particular post within a thread, allowing the thread to continue, would be the best option. In my opinion there are other times a single post makes the thread takes a "left turn" and it's impossible to get it back on the "right track" and the only way to resolve the problem is to lock the thread. As far as "locking out" a poster for a day, I would never advocate doing that. That is nothing more than singling out a poster and punishing that poster for breaking a rule. The goal of the moderators isn't punishment or making an example of any poster but to keep the content of the HSBBW acceptable to the "other" thousands of members. Yes, there are times that single posters are moderated or even banned but in those isolated cases it's done not to punish a member but to protect the integrity of the HSBBW and the interest of every other member.

It makes no difference who moderates or how they moderate there will always be those that oppose ANY type of moderation by ANY person. I know that moderators make mistakes too. Since there are no black and white rules on moderating, your suggestions and others' suggestions about "how" you think the boards should be moderated adds to the moderator's ability to maintain the quality of the message boards.

Fungo, I feel there are times that it is perfectly acceptable to delete a post instead of a thread and pm the poster that if he continues to break the rule there will be consequences.

I have had had situations in which I deleted a post. Informed the poster and the poster still did not comply. Then greater action is needed. We have all seen the total Anti-Posters who just won't behave. There are answers for them as well.

That being said. I agree that if a thread takes a total left turn sometimes it is more prudent just to close a thread.
