As a 2013 I'm aware that coaches with interest are unable to call me, but I can call them. However, playing for a pretty reputable summer travel team, my coach has a handful of good connections. He told me that he would begin calling up some of his contacts this week to talk about me. My question is..what exactly happens in these conversations? Would I be more suited to call the coaches myself and let them know of my information and then refer them to my coach? Any information on the benefits of having coaches call or anyones experience with this is appreciated! Thanks.

They will always listen to the coach's thoughts on your game before they will listen to yours; especially if they view your coach as a good contact.

Trust your coach to be honest and hopefully he comes to you will some good news regarding interest from a school. They will still need to see you play, so maybe he gets them thinking that a trip to see you is worth it. Good luck!
Agreed that a credible coach who is willing to go the extra mile can be a valuable source of information for college recruiters. You're fortunate to have him on your side.

However, make certain that you and your coach are on the same page with respect to colleges that make sense for you. His "contacts" could be at all the right places...or not.

Quality communication and close collaboration with your coach can be very important as he reaches out to recruiters.

Best of luck to you!
There are several things that go on in these situations from my experience. First of all the showcase coach and the player along with the parents talk about where the player wants to go to school. Or what programs the player has interest in and what programs the coach, player and parents feel are a good fit for the player. Most of the time everyone is on the same page. Sometimes the player is talented enough where anyone is in play. Sometimes the player is limited by talent, grades, etc in options. Most players have limits. Some do not. But its very important for all the parties to be on the same page.

The coach will have several things going on here. First of all coaches will call the coach and inquire about the player. They will ask questions about the player. They will want to know if their school is a school the player would be interested in. The coach will contact coaches. He will ask the coaches if they are interested in the player. Have they seen him play? Do they like him? Do they have a need for him? Sometimes interest will be high, moderate, low or none at all. Sometimes it will peek their interest to find the player is interested in them. They will then make sure they get a closer look at the player if they have not already done so.

The coach can reach out and see what the interest level is. The coach can reach out and let the coaches know the player is interested. The coach can relay the information gained to player and parents. Around here the standard way this stuff works is the showcase coach works for the player and parents. He contacts the coaches that the player and parent are interested in and the coaches of the programs the parties feel the player can play at and are a good fit for the player. Thats pretty much how the ball gets rolling. Sometimes the coaches get it rolling first when they see a player they really like and want the coach to know they really like the player - and want their interest in the player relayed to the player and the parents.

If your playing on a high profile showcase team the coach should have the connections and the ability to contact the coaches that watch your team play. He should be able to get information to you and your parents that can clear some things up for you. Thats part of their job.

Sit down with your parents and talk about the schools your interested in. Sit down with your coach and tell him what schools your interested in. Get on the same page with all parties and then let the coach do his thing. It will clear up pretty quickly in most cases. Some coaches will have a need and like you. Some coaches might like you but wont have a need. Some might not like you. But the most important thing is being on the same page with your parents and coach so you can work together in all of this. Good luck
