I was wondering what the varsity coaches on here do regarding catcher limits/rest, or if there is such a thing?  Couldn't find any older threads regarding this specifically (probably using wrong key words).

Game last night got me thinking about this.  Showed up to game and was surprised to see son suited up.  Thought a small non-conference game would be a good day of rest after double header Tuesday, another conference game tonight and a 3 game invitational coming up on Saturday.  Then I started looking at past games and realized it's been three weeks since he got to just DH.  There's only been 8 innings total all season that he wasn't behind the plate.

I guess I'm just wondering if this the norm?

I'd agree that last night's situation would be a good time to get the catcher behind him some playing time (and spell him some, just to get a little arm-rest).   My son only leaves the game if we have a good lead on someone (10 runs or so).

In 3 years of my son playing college baseball, I have NEVER seen the same catcher catch both games of a DH.  And they play DHs every weekend.

I think it is something that needs to be addressed just like they have done with pitchers.  I have seen teams catch the same kid for 3 or 4 games in a day in a tournament and I don't think it is good for the kids.  Catchers need rest, just like pitchers do.  That's a lot of squatting and a lot of throws - even though they are not all high intensity throws.  Some rest is needed and deserved.

Same with my son's college teams.  In a double header, the catcher that started in game one would either DH, or be on the bench while the #2 catcher caught the 2nd game.  I don't recall one time where either catcher caught both games of a double header.

Last year our HS team had the best catcher in the area. He was behind the plate for 711 of the 767 batters our pitchers faced, and the year before he was there for 493 of the 503 batters our pitchers faced. This season our catcher was “average” on an “average” team. Of the 850 batters we faced, he pitched to 139 and caught for 625.
