My son will be entering high school next year and I am concerned about the quality of coaching he will recieve. Here is why: the high school coach is a rah rah guy who is always telling the players that it's "ok" when they make mistakes. When giving defensive signals he looks like he is doing charades. He swings a fake golf club (four), throws a fake high five (5), shoots a apair of six shooters ...pointing his fingers (6), points to his teeth (two), etc. to communicate bunt coverages, 1st-3rd situations, etc. My son has aspirations of playing college baseball (he is 6'1" and 160 as an 8th grade catcher/pitcher)...my son tells me he will not do those signals and would rather switch positions that have to do them. (The catcher relays the signals to the team...) He would feel like the coach is disrespecting the game of baseball by "playing charades".

How do you go about voicing your concern to the head coach? Or am I just over reacting?

baseballprez,
Welcome to the HSBBW! That is one of the funniest first posts I've ever read. Can you get pictures of this guy?
But seriously, it may hurt the boy's pride a little to relay these "signs", (six shooters.. that's priceless) but think of the bullpen stories he'll have to share when he gets a little further along!
I think going to the coach, who obviously has limited experience, would require far more discretion than an 8th grader could muster with a straight face. Hang in there, and keep us posted.
