bbregie,

If they are calling your son, that means your son is a very good ball player. I am here right now and it is like being in the Land of Oz - spectacular beauty this time of year.

This school and program has every intangible that you could hope for. It is not for the faint of heart however. It provides stiff competition at every position. To play there, your son will have to beat out kids from all across the nation and Canada. There was another thread about Coastal as well:

Coastal Carolina

Feel free to send me a pm.
Dad04 - I just checked the roster and for the life of me, cannot figure out who Ollie is. I am sure this is a nickname so let me know and I will say hello for you.

BTW, huge congrats to Buddy Smile Not only is he tearing it up this year - his sophmore campaign, he is dominating at the D1 level. Keep that arm healthy and he obviously can set his sights on the next level.
CD,

Thanks!

A step at a time. Hopefully he can get past U. New Orleans on Saturday. Smile

My bad. Too many good South Carolina baseball programs for me to keep track of. I was thinking of Ollie at C of C. Between CC, C of C, Charleston Southern, Clemson, USC and the others I'm fogetting, its a challange for an out of stater. dizzy

I have studied the program pretty extensively as my son was interested in the school. I would offer the following superlatives:

Great campus and location. Conway, SC is near [very near like 20 minutes away] Myrtle Beach, SC which has great beaches, great restaurants, and lots of young adults of both sexes. In the late spring to early fall it is crowded and happening. Costal has a very nicely laid out campus and the outdoor baseball facilities are first class. I do not know anything about the indoor facilities, other than what is on the website.

The head coach, Gary Gilmore, has recently signed a long term contract which means there should be coaching stability at least at the head coach level for several years. That is an important factor, IMHO.

Not knowing what position your son plays or what Costal is interested in him for, I will simply mention that Bill Jarmen, Costal's pitching coach for the last 10 years or so, left Costal in July, 2005 to take over the head coaching position at Lander University, also in SC. It is my understanding [hopefully if I am wrong someone will correct me] that Coach Jarmen has not been replaced per se but that Coach Gilmore is the "pitching coach" in addition to his other duties as head coach.

My wife, my son and I visited Coastal in March 2006 watched a game, toured the campus and talked to an assistant coach. We are no longer interested in the school. PM me if you want more details.

Legit concern but Coach IMO is very approachable, and I'm sure would discuss his pitching philosophy with ur son. With some programs just because they have a labeled pitching coach doesn't mean they are experts. Campus is small but very nice.
Great program that is constantly looking to re-tool and better itself, but then again what program, at this level, isn’t always doing this. The campus, cut out of a southern pine forest, and location (weather) are to die for, but that’s coming from someone use to Chicago winters. However, a well positioned Atlantic Coast Hurricane will add to the excitement (and I thought snow days were a big deal…). It’s not a county club and is self proclaimed “blue collar baseball”. Bring your work ethic and a bit of humility. Prima-Donna’s need not apply… This is a top D1 program that routinely plays top 25/10 programs. I second CD, the competition is fierce. CCU is having a bit of a rough year. glare However, in the past, CCU have been ranked in the top 50, last year ranked, depending on the poll, 23/25 with a number 1 seed in the Tempe Regional.

Academically, it is a solid university. It’s a bit unknown but offers nationally acclaimed curriculums look for them, they are there… great science and business programs. It’s not MIT, Stanford, or Harvard/Yale but who is (how many of us can afford them)… meeting You will work to maintain good grades and participate in the baseball program. The State of South Carolina has committed to pouring funds into this school. The campus is growing before your eyes, building everywhere. The best is yet to come and I am pleased that my son has the opportunity to participate building the tradition.

Gilmore was negotiating a contract after the 2005 season and IMHO contributed to CCU losing their pitching coach in July of last year (along with Jarmin, last years pitching coach, being given a great opportunity to become a head coach). I have several dear friends with sons playing on some of the top D1 programs and the only thing that separates these programs is $ and that’s another thread unto itself.

Just happy to be here… hi

TW344 I have sent you a PM and would love to compare notes.
BBR likewise, if I can be of any help please don’t hesitate to contact me.
