Nice article on them in USA today... notice some of the words that are used like blue collar, lunch pail, checking egos at the door, outworking people, taking players who are not quite as polished and developing them, underdog, and ultimately, cream of the crop.

I get asked questions about them quite often so thought I would share.

Glory Days for Coastal Carolina

What happened to that Goldberg kid from Beachwood who went there?

I know his family and his mom specifically very well.

He is doing extremely well at Ohio State where they are thrilled to have him.

Look, nobody is served by discussing things publicly but transfers happen all the time in college baseball - at no fault of either party.
CD,
that is a great read and another wonderful compliment to Coach Gilmore and what he stands for, even beyond baseball. To think that a "grinder" as a baseball coach created a "blue collar" winning spirit in an entire athletic program...that is nice thinking.
Somehow, I don't believe this article or attitude of working and grinding from the bottom up made it to the desk of the AD of the Cal. Bears. Frown

That point should not be lost on anyone. Up until last year, Coach Gilmore's office was an old, beat up utility trailer. It kind of was a symbol for the program and I am almost sad to see it go even though I am sure he will be served well by his new office. Lots of funding for the program comes from sources outside the athletic department and that is a credit to the coach and his staff's hard work. It is not a lot of fun to go out and fund-raise year after year while "grinding" for every last thing of need but in the end, he has shown a way for other coaches to succeed.

Ironically infielddad - Cal and Coastal will meet on the baseball field this spring.

Cal is reporting a final decision will be issued tomorrow on its baseball program.
To complicate the issues even further, the NYT ran an article yesterday analyzing the cuts and concluding/reporting that if they are not rescinded, Cal will be far out of Title IX compliance. Supposedly, if the cuts are upheld, to then be in Title IX compliance, Cal will need to add 50 women athletes and cut another 80 men's positions.
With an AD being paid over $400,000 per year and a staff where it appears many are paid over $100,000 per year, it would seem these issues would have a more solid and comprehensive management.

Nice article C Dad. Thanks for posting. It is kind of disheartening though to hear the coach that kept the school on the NCAA sports map for so many years flat out admit that football is king.

Coach Gilmore is a humble man and and I think he was just acknowledging realities. Football generates more actual revenue than all the other sports combined and I believe that is true for every university in the country that offers football.

Baseball on the other hand generates tangential revenue that is a little harder to account for i.e., someone found out about Coastal by virtue of the success of their baseball team and decided to attend there.

Some of the big SEC schools like Arkansas as but one example can indeed generate baseball revenue for their respective schools at the turn-styles but they are the exception rather than the rule. I've got to believe that most baseball teams are money-losers as far as generating funds for the athletic department. That is why schools like Coastal have to figure out how to generate funds in different ways than just relying on the athletic department to provide.

CD--I had a question about Coastal Carolina and thought you would be a great one to ask. They advertise several camps as prospect or showcase. We were thinking of going down as a family for a 2 day camp in Sept. and hang out for 4-5 days after.

My question is: Do you know anything about these camps? Do they give evaluations? Are they just money makers or are they legitimate exposure opportunities?

I emailed them recently with similar questions but they are obviously busy right now. Any help would be appreciated.

Good questions jdawg_24.

They have a combination of scouts at their camps including other D1 schools, D2, D3, and pro scouts. If a camper stands out at the camp, they indeed will be recruited by the hosts and/or one of the other schools attending. I am not sure about written evaluations and will see if I can find that information out.

Thanks! I knew there were other college coaches going to be there and figured that it would be a good one to be seen by both Coastal and others as well. My son is interested in CC but only time will tell if he's going to be talented enough. I thought if he is interested and we can go than it would be worth it.

There's two Kentucky kids in the lineup today. Rich Whitten is their first baseman and John Fidanza is making his college debut today as a true freshmen catcher.

You're 100% correct. The worst thing that could have ever happened to collegiate athletics.
