Actually, some schools don't run a lot of sprints or long distance. They will get their running in doing baserunning drills and infield and outfield drills. If they are done right, there is no need to do any more running, as your players will be in condition.
My son's former coach did it quite well. He would have the players run a timed run of about 3 miles in the hills as soon as fall practice started. They all made it with room to spare and then there was very little running except for drills after that for position players. What it showed was that the players came to fall practice in good shape and ready to go. They then spent their fall practicing baseball and not track.
The pitchers were on a separate program.
