Actually, some schools don't run a lot of sprints or long distance. They will get their running in doing baserunning drills and infield and outfield drills. If they are done right, there is no need to do any more running, as your players will be in condition.
My son's former coach did it quite well. He would have the players run a timed run of about 3 miles in the hills as soon as fall practice started. They all made it with room to spare and then there was very little running except for drills after that for position players. What it showed was that the players came to fall practice in good shape and ready to go. They then spent their fall practicing baseball and not track. SmileThe pitchers were on a separate program.
Cardio work builds stamina and mental toughness...without it a player is more likely to suffer from the lack of intensity necessary to compete in tough situations. That's the reason in football, for instance a coach will develop the running game first to help the offense become tough and stubborn through repetitive running and enormous stress.

To win a player must be tough enough to "impose-his-will" on a giving situtation through mental toughness and undeniable unwillingness to give up.

That attitude is created by running...when you think you can't go any further...you do.
I think a lot depends on the coach’s philosophy and the facilities available to the baseball team. When my son attended Auburn University running was much less than he anticipated. When he did run it was mostly sprints. They did have one of the best conditioning facilities in the country and I think this took the place of a lot of the running.
It really boils down to your position. Pitchers will distance run more than position players and position players will usually have a good balance between distance and sprint/footwork drills.

My son says his agility drills are much tougher than his sprint/distance work.

I know some schools that run their players very hard in the fall and some are more moderate in their appraoch, so like averything else - it just depends on the coach.
