What jackass Coach is still cutting players 10 days before opening day college baseball is a fucking joke!

Dang. That is not cool. Sorry to those who it has happened to.
How many players were on the team before the cuts?
OTOH - he could keep all those players who never see the field during the regular season, but yet cause "problems" for the team due to complaints about not playing. Yes, 10 days feels short, but you clearly haven't given enough context. Dadof3 provides 1 thought I had.
There's many reasons (some suspect) that cause late cuts. Then there's the what are my alternatives given the late cut related to lack of transfer oppty or I just paid some large, non-refundable tuition bill which certainly could make one wonder, if you knew you were going to cut, why not let us know sooner.
I think Matt Rhule provides an interesting insight for possibly not having Spring Football game at Nebraska to avoid poaching of his players through the transfer portal.
A travel teammate of my son was told on Thursday noon before the first weekend series. He was already packed for the trip leaving that afternoon.
I saw that about Nebraska. Sad that they have to do that, but understandable.
RJM, sorry to hear that. That really stinks
Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. One day he is practicing with the team and the next he is told he is not on the team cause “they don’t see him getting any innings this year”. Him and one of his roommates was also let go. No real explanation other than what I stated above.
there are 36 players on the roster online. Who in the hell does this? This could have been done in December? Now he’s screwed and can’t go anywhere.
By the way, this was done after they had their first pitch dinner. Given them jerseys with their names on the back etc.
I am seriously thinking about taking this all the way up to the athletic Director and ask him who treats their student athletes this way? it is completely unacceptable and nobody should be treated this way. Oh, and by the way, we don’t have a pitching coach he left to go to the another minor league team two years in a row this happened
If he would’ve done this in December fine no big deal but 10 days before the season starts this guy’s nuts
I agree with you. Variations on this theme happen every year, even just on this site:
2024 (people posted examples going back to 2006):

2023:
There were signs right? I think I remember you saying he wasn't getting to play in the fall game and they were just sticking with RHP all the time. He didn't consider leaving at the end of fall semester?
They sat out all left handed pitchers in that scrimmage. Again who does that? Other than that they told him it’s wide open for pitching.
He pitches well in practices, team scrimmages etc. There are kids that had 18.00 ERA on the team last year and they are back. Actually, there are several.
I don’t get why you won’t say hey you may not play much out of the gate, but keep working hard and we will see.
So now they are down to 17 pitchers. You know several will get hurt. You need at least 4 pitchers per game.
One kid on the team has the yips after winter break. He can’t throw a strike. He’s still there!
And by the way, the other kid, they told them a week after he could’ve got out of all his classes and probably moved home but now the kids stuck there and has to finish it up and then he can move back home again. What asshole does that? he knew he’s not stupid
And his parents came into town went to the first pitch dinner so on and so forth. I’m glad I didn’t go to that first pitch dinner because if I did, I’d really be pissed off giving them money
The point is you don’t treat anybody like they just did. I don’t give a fuck who they are. These guys think they are so high and mighty. They are not real coaches. Real coaches develop players and strive for the whole team to better. It’s to easy now to just hit the portal.
is it too late to find another school? Did he have any other offers when he was in the portal? Can he reach out to those schools?
everything I hear and read is that baseball becomes a business. And you can’t take anything for granted.
And I mean that in a positive way, always need to work on getting better knowing someone is looking to take your spot.
HelloIt’s too late at this point he’s a junior. The portal is closed and you can’t go anywhere else until next season
And baseball is not everything people I get that 99.9% of these kids are never gonna go pro and probably about 95%. We’re never gonna touch the field but the point is is I would like to seen them just finished one more year
Many coaches recruit portal transfers, not always just for their skill, but for experience and leadership.
Could it be a possibility that they just didn't see that happening and just as a player has reasons to walk away, the coach has his reasons to let players go. Or perhaps your son jumped on the opportunity before doing homework on his current situation.
I am sorry that this has happened to your son.
If a player is on scholarship, it cannot be taken away. However, at this time it does appear that he should not consider transfering to another D1 bb program.
In the college baseball world, there isn't a huge need for a lot of lefty pitchers on staff unless they get players out.
The most important thing for him is to graduate and move forward.
And you do as well.
So sorry to hear about your son's experience. I know there was alot of blood, sweat and tears throughout the entire process.
Admittedly I know nothing about college baseball but is there any opportunity to play club ball for fun ? Perhaps that would less pressure and more enjoyable.
At this point we are done. No more baseball. If I knew in advance how brutal this process is I would have told him to forgo even playing in college.
Next year is going to be rude awakening for a lot more players when they have to get down to 34. As of right now they have till end of 2025.
I will be surely cheering against the team you can bet on that.
