I am curious at what point a college coach becomes interested in recruiting a pitcher? Does the pitcher have to be throwing 85mph+? Does the pitcher have to have played high school varsity?

My son is looking at possibly attending a showcase, a few tryouts and camps, etc. but he is not sure if the timing is right. He is 6'-3", 175lbs, rhp, and he throws 80-81mph (game cruzzing speed on Stalker). He will be a senior next year but did not play varsity his junior year (seven senior pitchers on school's varsity last year). He has a very good work ethic and his goal is to get to 85mph or more by spring. Should he wait until he has improved and spend the time and money after his senior year on showcase, tryouts, etc. or is there value in attending as many as possible the rest of the summer? Should he be contacting college coaches even though he has no varsity credentials? His high school is a large 5A school in Texas.

Just piggybacking on what TR said....this summer/early fall is the big-time for rising seniors. You carry what you've got into the fray and must let the chips fall.....the coaches want to SEE the kids play...I don't think they care if he played varsity or not if he can pitch and they can see this for themselves. Got to get out there very, very soon (next two-three months) and go for it. Beyond that, the pickings become slimmer and slimmer.
My rising Sr. son is playing on a good competitive summer team and has played in many tournaments where NO scouts ever showed up. I say that to say this. Watching them play is where the Scouts love to see them perform, but right behind that is showcases. So I wouldnt be overly concerned if he doesn't get to play in front of them much this summer. Just be sure he attends good showcases through the summer and fall.

I've thought about sending my son to one of PG's showcases but I have to say I find it hard to fork over $500+ for what many say is a madhouse during that weekend. Does that mean he might miss out on being one of those "ranked" Top 500 Seniors because PG didnt scout him. Probably. I am from the school that if he's got the talent to play at the next level, he will be found one way or another. We are doing our share to get him seen at other "top tier" showcases here in Georgia, Tennessee, etc.

According to one of the articles here on HSBaseball, it says that 80% of DII, DIII, NAIA, JUCO's sign a majority of their kids from April on. So don't worry if he doesn't sign in the early signing period.

Right now he needs to focus on attending showcases, working out, long toss, and academics.
I would suggest sending emails to schools stating your qualifications and your interest in the program. Send emails stating I will be playing at this tournament on this date and here are the directions to the field. Do not expect them to just know you exist. Help them find you. I have seen many scouts at big tournaments. Draw them to you.
My son got an invite to this very same showcase in North Georgia back in early June but opted not to go due to the cost. Somewhere we had to draw the line between summer ball, traveling expenses, i.e. gas, rooms, meals, and other less expensive but good showcases that were coming up.

Honestly, I haven't heard either good or bad about the TPX showcase.

If there is ONE thing I've learned from the message boards over the past few months is this: many of these "name brand" showcases are all about the money only. Keep your ear to the ground and I'm certain a good quality college showcase will show up for you.

Best of luck.
