CNU hosts Shenandoah this weekend for 2 games, then has next week (Spring Break), with games at Hampden-Sydney (Monday), at Virginia Weslyan (Wednesday), Demorest (Friday in Georgia), Emory (Saturday in Atlanta), and a DH at Newport News with Castleton State on Sunday; 8 games in 9 days.

I hope my staff hasn't walked out by the time I get back.

BRIDGEWATER, VA. - Shenandoah University ran its season opening winning streak to three games Wednesday afternoon with an 11-3 non-league victory over host Bridgewater.

Shenandoah (3-0) banged out 14 hits to down the Eagles (0-4). Five players, led by sophomore Scott Lambert, all had at least two hits in the contest.

Lambert led the hit parade with a 3-for-3 afternoon that included a double and a triple along with a three runs batted in. His double capped a two-run third and gave SU a 4-0 lead.

Bridgewater answered that two-run third with a pair of its own in the bottom of the frame, but could not get any closer than two runs the rest of the way.

Coach Kevin Anderson's club then put the game out of reach with three runs in the eighth and another three in the ninth.

Senior Jason Burgess (1-0) earned the victory with 1.1 innings of relief work. Burgess allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out one. He came on two hitters into the fifth for sophomore Matthew Davis, who had allowed two runs on four hits and one walk.

Davis struck out two, as did freshman Colin Michael. Michael got the final six outs of the contest without allowing a run, but he did not enter the game in a save situation.

In addition to Lambert's three hits, Daniel Ziccardy, Ryan Anderson, Adam Kessel and Drew Vernon had two hits each. Senior Steven Todd was just 1-for-5, but he made it count with a two-run home run in the eighth.

Box Score

Shenandoah's game tomorrow afternoon with Misericordia has been postponed until March 12. The Hornets next outing is Friday at noon with a non-league doubleheader against Penn State - Altoona.

Lynchburg College opened ODAC play with a 6-5 win over Guilford Saturday at Lynchburg. Jason Kelley went the distance for LC, striking out 7 and walking one. Twin brother and battery mate Justin Kelly added two doubles and an RBI.

More impressive was GC leadoff hitter and ODAC Player of the Week Joe John who hit for the cycle. The two teams play again on Sunday with a 9-inning tilt at Guilford.

Hampden Sydney drop a pair against Virginia Wesleyan. VW took it to us in the 1st game 7-2...FC alumni Ricky Allred led the attack with 3 hits & 3 rbi's. Guilford transfer Dave Whigham pitched well for VW giving up 5 hits with 8 K's. In game two H-S jumped out on Rivera with 3 in the 1st but he settled down after then as VW won game two 7-5. Sydney literally gave the game away in the 6th inning with a 2 out fielding error and a botched run down play with VW scoring 5 runs after 2 outs with 4 of those runs coming after the error. David Toney had 5 hits in the game for Hampden Sydney. Kevin Nally had 3 hits for VW. The game ended on a line drive double play with the runners at 1st and 3rd.

Seven-Run Ninth Gives LC Baseball a 16-12 Win at Guilford
GREENSBORO, NC – The Lynchburg College baseball team trailed 12-9 entering the final frame Sunday afternoon, but scored seven times in the ninth inning to out-slug Guilford College 16-12 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.

LC plated two runs, but had two outs in their last at bats. Junior Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) provided a go-ahead two-run single and the Hornets added three more insurance runs to seal the win.

Crews was 3-6 on the day with three RBI, as Lynchburg ripped 16 hits, and had nine other runners reach base on walks. Eric O’Brien (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was 3-5 and David Gaines (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) went 2-3 with a double and four RBI. Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) was 2-4 with two doubles and four RBI while Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Jonathan Sewell (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s Belfield) each had two hits. Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) earned the win in relief, throwing two innings, allowing just one hit and three strikeouts.

Chad Boone was 4-5 with a home run and six RBI for the Quakers (5-7/0-2 ODAC). Phil Drew also had four hits - one a triple.

The Hornets (8-2/2-0 ODAC) host Averett University Tuesday at 2 p.m. on Fox Field.

Christopher Newport (10-3, 3-1)topped Shenandoah by identical scores Saturday and Sunday, 9-5. Shenandoah jumped up 5-1 on Sunday but defensive lapses were costly. Saturday CNU hit its first 3 home runs of the year, with a little help from the breeze blowing out to left. CNU did a better job of getting clutch hits both days and Ian Lenda had two super outings, coming on in relief and getting out of a second and third with no outs on Saurday allowing 1 run (on a passed ball) in his only inning, then Sunday came in the 5th with Shenandoah up 5-1 and shut them down the rest of the way. Shenandoah has some serious sticks but some defensive lapses hurt them.
