Congrats to a couple of former Tidewater area players off to good starts in the CAA. William & Mary senior third baseman & former Nansemond River HS player Greg Sexton off to a great start after fourteen games hitting over .500, with 5 doubles, two triples & three HR's. Old Dominion pitcher & former Oscar Smith HS player Anthony Shawler off to a 4-0 start, with his last two starts being complete game shutouts. Both players have already been chosen once as CAA player & pitcher of the week.

Good luck to each for continued success throughout the year.
Hampden-Sydney took another one on the nose from USA conference member CNU....14-5. Great Bridge alumni Trey Bailey led the CNU attack with 3 hits and former Landstown player Zach Hutchinson and PA alumni Alex Owens had 2 hits each for CNU..Alex had a double and triple to plate 3 rbi's. Former Mills Godwin Luke Sweeny had his third 3 hit game in the last 4 for Sydney. Todd Harrell (Nansemond-Suffolk) had 2 hits and freshman Ross Turner (Poquoson High) produced his 1st two college hits.

One thing to note..Hokieone's two sons and cvstings son played today for CNU...I just find it ironic that 4 message board sons were on the field at one time or another playing against each other....unfortunatly they were 1 for 6 combined.

Apperson moved to centerfield in the 5th game of the year against Averett...we were 0-4 with a freshman there...while the young man didn't play bad he was a freshman....after John moved to center we won four in a row 5 out of 6 until this past weekend. John has got great speed and a gun...Sweeny plays well in left and my son came in to RF and the next thing you know you could see it happing.....but if you not hitting...well I'll leave it at that.

yea with the moves...eight freshmen including pitchers...but I think the coach is looking for someone to step up...whoever does will start to see the play time....fr, soph, jr, sr...it doesn't matter at this point...the coach sees 5-8

Averett Cools Lynchburg Bats; Wins 2-1
http://www.lynchburg.edu/documents/Athletics/baseball/2007_Stats/lcbase11.htm

LYNCHBURG, VA - Strong pitching and timely hitting led to an Averett University victory Tuesday over the Lynchburg College baseball team, 2-1.

Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) went 2-for-3 and stole a base to lead the Hornets offense and starting pitcher Evan Durrer (Charlottesville, VA/Charlottesville) only gave up two runs in six innings. However, Averett’s Ahmed Shelton (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) kept the Hornets at bay, giving up only one run in nine innings, scattering five hits and six walks.

The Hornets (8-3) had a number of opportunities to score in the ninth, but only came away with one run. Jeff Lincoln (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) drove in the lone Hornet run on a sacrifice fly, but the Hornets had two on with no outs and ended the game with the bases loaded.

The Hornets travel to Winchester, VA Wednesday to battle Shenandoah University at 2 p.m. and host North Carolina Wesleyan this Friday on Fox Field at 2 p.m.

That was the SID's take. My take is Shelton is the BEST pitcher we have faced this year....so what if he is a 23 or 24 year old FRESHMAN. Don't take much into account about the walks...it was a very TIGHT strike zone today. He could have easily had 4-5 more K's and 3-4 less walks with a more forgiving plate umpire.
Hampden-Sydney pick up a big victory today defeating 7th ranked North Carolina Wesleyan 9-8 with a 2 out 9th inning base hit by Fr Ben Brawley. Sydney came back from a 5-0 ball game with 4 runs in the 6th inning.... Brawley bases loaded hit capped that inning. It looked like H-SC would walk away with this game when J Apperson came thru with a 2 run double and fr Tyler Napier came thru with a 2 run single in the 8th inning for a 8-5 lead....NCW tied it up in the top of the 9th with a 1 out 3 run homer by Mark Wooten.H-S won it in the bottom half of the 9th when David Toney drew a 8 pitch walk with 2 outs and pinch runner Ryan Daniels moved to 2nd base on a wild pitch.....Fr Brawley came thru after he fouled off 4 pitches with a 1-2 count,...he then lined a single to right that scored the winning run. The freshmen Brawley, Appling & Zackowski stepped up today with 2 hits a piece and Napier's pinch hit gave the boys a 3 run lead.

Homers Highlight Hornet Win Over NC Wesleyan

LYNCHBURG, VA - Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and David Gaines (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) each hit home runs Friday as the Lynchburg College baseball team topped #7-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College 9-5 in a non-conference match up at Fox Field.

Grant hit a two-run shot in the sixth inning to put the Hornets on top for good, 6-4, and Gaines followed with a solo blast in the seventh. In all, eight Hornets accounted for 16 hits on the day. Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) and Eric O’Brien (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) each went 4-for-4, with Bradley scoring one run and driving in two and O’Brien driving in three.

Conner Thompson (Solomons, MD/Reservior) pitched 6.2 innings in relief of injured starter Spencer Garrett (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton), giving up only two runs while collecting the win.

The Hornets travel to Bridgewater, VA Saturday to take on Bridgewater College in a double-header, beginning at noon. The Hornets’ next home game will be Thursday, March 15 against King College at 2 p.m.

Doolittle's motion has changed so much it took me a moment to recognize him. I guess it's been working so far, but at this point it appears he's working more on hiding the ball and getting tailing action, whereas before he had more of a straight-on, power approach with a stiff slider.

I'll be interested to see how this goes now that he's going to be facing ACC teams every Friday.

Why do some folks have to mess with success?
Another long trip in the car, from the Beach to the outer skirts of Lynchburg and back...Our game was played at Forest Middle School? H-SC defeated Roanoke today 1-0 & 10-8...Larry Green pitched a gem in game one to defeat Roanoke 1-0...H-S scored their only run on a bases loaded walk. Then in game two H-SC was trailing 5-2 after 5...8-3 after 7...they scored 5 in the 8th with a two run homer by Josh Michael, followed by a two out solo shot by David Toney and a run score double by John Apperson to tie the score at 8 each. They scored two more in the 9th when Greenbrier Christian alumni Will Zackowski started the inning off with a walk. Will moved to 2nd base on a sac bunt and scored on a Josh Michael's liner to left center....David Toney followed that up with a double to score Josh to make the final score 10-8. J Michaels, David Toney and John Apperson all had 3 hits each for the Tigers.

Go Tigers.....off to Georgia...Piedmont, Huntingdon, and LaGrange.

fcv dad-Piedmont has a really nice stadium, enjoy. (A Mr. Loudermilk will likely be at the game cheering on Piedmont. Very fine gentleman to talk with..and his family paid for the gorgeous stadium too.)

We just got back in from the road, 2 today at CNU, where CNU knocked off Castleton in a doubleheader to run their record to 15-4.

Oddly enough, the highlight of the 8 games in 9 days was the one loss, 1-0 to Emory (10-1); the game was tightly pitched and played both ways, with Emory getting a runner to third on a double steal and scoring him on a groundout for the only run in 1-0 win. Tremendous ballgame to watch; would've been a tad nicer if we had gotten a run in.

Trae Bailey is on a pure roll, taking his average up over .400 for the year. Everything he hits seems to be a line drive somewhere.

Praise the Lord, no more hotel beds for a while...
