Looking for a little information with regards to college pitching and the draft possibilities that come with starting pitching and relief pitching. My son is a converted RF to pitcher in JUCO with first season being redshirt and only really playing intersquad games, while he has learned how to pitch and has shown promise as a pitcher, his stuff plays really good as a closer (can't throw a straight ball) has 4 seam fastball that he rarely uses and 2 seam fastball that breaks so hard with low 3/4 arm slot he has to start off the plate to get a strike, then there's the slider I can't catch due to break. With that being said, he has a comfort level with relief pitching and throwing from stretch but summer college league head coach says he is to good not to be starting. So real question is a 5'10" - 170lb RHP going to get more interest as a closer or a starter, if he can run his 4 seam into the 90's and his 2 seam around 88mph.

Other factors that we are dealing with are changing schools, and the ideal of him being a starter or reliver at his next school. I assume he will get more interest as a starter but with his size should he stay as a reliever and continue to fine tune his game in that regard with focus on closer role to move foward in 4yr college or possible draft.

Would be interested in having someone in the business evaluate his skills and give proper advice, I'm out of my comfort zone in this area.

I believe you have gotten advice from someone in the business already...the summer college coach...Don't take this the wrong way, but, it's time for you to sit back and let things work itself out.  Whatever school and whatever coach he ends up playing for will decide when/where and what role he will fill on the team.  If your description is accurate, it sounds like he has some good potential and he will find his place.

Thanks for reply lefthookdad, I have been talking with son as to benefits to both sides of discussion and feel that his options are a win win no matter which way it goes, and was looking for some confirmation as to any advantage one way or the other. Like you stated this is up to him and his coaches, I am only trying to get some insight into the way the system looks at the different types of pitchers and their potiental position in the game.
