I notice that the summer collegiate leagues tend to vary in level of skill with some catering to D1 (i.e., Cape Cod) while others tend to be made up of D2 or D3 guys (i.e., NYCBL). What are the preferred leagues for D1 players understanding that there is always several exceptions.

I believe the Northwoods league is now the largest. Many from top D1 programs.
Cape Cod League hands down has the highest amount of high profile prospects that will be drafted.
If you can get on this league and play against these guys, you will raise your draft stock as well. Problem is that they cater more to the larger D1 programs that turn out pro players on a regular basis.
I think the answer depends on what you what to accomplish in the summer. A lot of this depends on what year in school you are. IMO younger kids just need playing time. Older kids may what exposure before the draft next year. My son's playing in a local league that has several D1 kids in it that just want Ab's.
College coaches put players in leagues that are commensurate with their skill level and what the coaching staff wants to achieve for the player regardless of the playing level. Placement should be done by the college coach in discussions with the player and they usually put them where they will develop and be comfortable with the level of play.
The coach also is mindful of their reputation. They want to send a kid who can compete and play.
Any player at any level should talk to their coach when they get to campus in the fall and make sure he knows they are interested.
Some teams do not care what level you are, just that you can play. In the Great Lakes league the Licking County Settlers have won the championship three years in a row. They usually have the largest percentage of "Lower Level" players of any of the great lakes teams.
It is best to find the best fit. and your sons coach should help with that.
