Long time lurker, first time poster...

Looking for feedback regarding college winter youth camps taking place during January and February: is it worth it, and recommendations. Backgrounder: our son is league age 11 playing up to 12, very talented, travel baseball only, takes-in private workouts with two different facilities in northern VA (in addition to travel practice).

Fearful these camps too generalized, and that it would be a waste of time. Feedback greatly appreciated.

Whether it's worth it depends on what you are looking to get out of it.

There is no recruiting value in attending these camps. No file will be opened on your son at that age. You will not make fast friends with the coaches, or make a long-lasting relationship that might pay off in later years. (I hope that went without saying, but just in case.)

But the camps themselves can be both enjoyable and a great learning experience. You might pick up some neat drills you can use to help your son improve his game. And it can give you son something to dream of and aim for as he moves forward.

If nothing else, it can help you and your son bond as fans of your nearby college's team, which can be a lot of fun if you make a practice of attending home games a few times a year.

My son (with me tagging along) went to winter camps at both W&M and at UVA. We enjoyed the camps and the father-son time together. Although we ultimately chose another school, we went on from the camps to see a lot of UVA games and it was a lot of fun. UVA has a great venue to see a game, it's a bargain price, and ACC baseball is good stuff. If you can afford it, I would recommend the experience.
